Rick Riordan’s ‘The Kane Chronicles’ Could Be Heading to Disney+ as a TV Series

Rick Riordan may be getting ready to expand his mythology universe on Disney+ beyond Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

A television adaptation of Riordan's bestselling The Kane Chronicles trilogy is reportedly in development for Disney+, with Riordan and writer-director Angela Robinson attached to create the project. Nexus Point News first reported the news, saying the potential series is being developed at 20th Television.

Before we start planning our return to Brooklyn House, however, there is an important distinction to make. Disney has not officially announced The Kane Chronicles as a Disney+ series, and there has been no reported series order, casting or premiere date. For now, this one belongs firmly in the “reportedly in development” category.

Still, for fans who have been waiting years to see Carter and Sadie Kane make it to the screen, it's certainly a development worth watching.

Rick Riordan and Angela Robinson Reportedly Team Up

According to the report, Riordan will create the potential adaptation alongside Angela Robinson, whose television credits include directing episodes of Wednesday and writing for series including How to Get Away With Murder and True Blood.

Robinson's involvement would also give the project another connection to Riordan's current television universe. She has directed episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which has become one of Disney+'s major young-adult fantasy franchises.

Nexus Point News reports that 20th Television acquired the rights to The Kane Chronicles in 2024 and is now moving forward with developing the property as a television series. Again, development doesn't necessarily guarantee that a show will ultimately make it onto Disney+, but after what happened with the previous adaptation attempt, fans at least have reason to be cautiously interested.

And yes, we said cautiously. We've been down this road with the Kanes before.

What Is ‘The Kane Chronicles’ About?

While Percy Jackson's adventures are rooted primarily in Greek mythology, The Kane Chronicles takes Riordan's storytelling into the world of ancient Egyptian mythology.

The trilogy begins with 2010's The Red Pyramid and centers on siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, who have lived very different lives following their mother's death. Sadie lives with their grandparents in London, while Carter travels around the world with their father, Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane.

When their father reunites them for what is supposed to be a research experiment at the British Museum, things go spectacularly wrong. The Egyptian god Set is unleashed, their father disappears and Carter and Sadie discover that their family history involves considerably more than archaeology.

The siblings eventually learn about their connection to an ancient order of Egyptian magicians as gods begin awakening in the modern world. Their story continues through The Throne of Fire and concludes with The Serpent's Shadow.

And if Disney+ really does move forward with this adaptation, a television format could give that mythology considerably more room to breathe than the previously planned movies.

Netflix Previously Tried to Bring the Kanes to the Screen

This isn't The Kane Chronicles' first trip through Hollywood development.

Netflix previously acquired the property with plans to turn the trilogy into a series of feature films, beginning with The Red Pyramid. The project spent several years in script development but ultimately never made it into production.

Riordan confirmed in 2024 that Netflix was no longer moving forward and that the rights had reverted to him. At the time, he explained that he and Becky Riordan were exploring other possibilities for the franchise but had nothing new to announce.

That makes the reported move to Disney particularly interesting. Riordan already has an established relationship with Disney and 20th Television through Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where he and Becky Riordan have been heavily involved as executive producers.

Bringing The Kane Chronicles into that same television home certainly makes sense on paper.

Could ‘The Kane Chronicles’ and ‘Percy Jackson’ Eventually Meet?

Now come on, you knew we were going here.

Carter and Sadie's world isn't completely separate from Percy's. Riordan eventually brought the characters together in the Demigods & Magicians crossover stories, which paired Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase with Carter and Sadie Kane.

That doesn't mean Disney is suddenly building the Rick Riordan Cinematic Universe, so nobody start designing the crossover poster just yet. There is currently no indication that a Kane Chronicles television adaptation would connect directly with the Percy Jackson series or adapt those crossover stories.

But if both shows eventually existed under the Disney+ umbrella? Well, the source material is sitting right there.

For now, though, The Kane Chronicles still has several steps to take before Carter and Sadie officially make their television debut. The reported involvement of Riordan and Robinson is certainly promising, but we'll be waiting for Disney or 20th Television to make things official before declaring that the Kanes are definitely coming to Disney+.

After the Netflix adaptation spent years in development without ever reaching the screen, we've learned our lesson.
