Boston Blue ended its first season with exactly the kind of finale fans of this franchise expect, emotional family conflict, dangerous investigations and a last-minute twist designed to make viewers miserable until fall. Instead of simply leaning on Blue Bloods nostalgia, though, the series finally proved it can stand on its own.
What made the finale work was how confidently it balanced the police procedural elements with the personal storylines. The episode never forgot that the relationships matter just as much as the arrests.
Danny had to get back into that unifrom to make his transition from New York City Prince Detective to Boston's finest. I mean the neoptism is the main catalyst in this franchise, so let's lean into that. Sean and Danny or is it Danny and Sean, who knows, but our favorite father and son duo were expecting to just chill for this shift but they stop a robbery in progress and Danny has to show Sean how old school takes down the bad guys. But let's clap for Marisa Ramirez returning and Danny and Baez getting back together!
It was also great to see Jonah and Grandpa working the streets together to help solve a case to save Mae's trial. Speaking of Mae, her and the Judge going public? Love that little relationship. Meanwhile, Sarah had to check her man's ex and let her know that she isn't taking her daughter overseas just to spite them. Now that's a mother that stepped up. Looking forward to seeing more of that family dynamic next season.

Now Lena and her boo Brian teamed up to stop the prison corruption. Brian's investigation led to a shady corportion called Dax Supply Company. He mainly wanted more time with Lena while deciding if he was taking a DEA job in Washington, D.C. Brian, we knew you weren't going anywhere. However, the big fakeout of the episode was Lena taking a bullet. Where is your vest girlie?
Lena being shot added urgency, but it also pushed several emotional arcs forward that had been lingering in the background all season. Her reconnecting with her father finally gave that storyline closure at the right moment, especially with the family dinner scenes emphasizing how much these characters have slowly become one unit.
Then the finale delivered its biggest shock. Brian said he is staying put, went to get some flowers and a truck crashed into him on purpose sending him in the river to swim with the fishes. Now we don't know if he is dead but it is not looking good.
More importantly, the finale succeeded because it no longer felt like a show trying to imitate Blue Bloods. Boston Blue finally developed its own tone, its own family dynamic, and its own identity. The series still carries the DNA of the original franchise, but this episode proved it can move beyond simply being a continuation.
Now viewers are left waiting all summer to learn Brian’s fate and after this finale, the show has earned enough confidence that the answer genuinely feels uncertain.
