Dutton Ranch Episode 3 Recap: The Yellowstone Spin-Off Just Got Brutal

The dust never settles for long in Montana. Just three weeks into the freshman season of the Yellowstone prequel series, the stakes have officially reached a boiling point. In Dutton Ranch Season 1, Episode 3, titled "Act of God Business," our favorite cowboys and corporate sharks find themselves drowning in a sea of infected livestock, teenage rebellion and cold-blooded secrets. It is a hour of television that proves the only thing more dangerous than the local wildlife is the local neighbors.

From Beulah Jackson's escalating shadow war to a biosecurity threat that could wipe out the entire Dutton legacy, this episode shifts the series into overdrive. Let's dive into exactly what went down on the range this week.

A Bovine Death Sentence Threatens the Dutton Empire

The crisis of the week lands squarely on Rip Wheeler’s shoulders. While working the pastures, Rip and the wranglers stumble upon a lone bull foaming at the mouth with blistered, bloody hooves. Enter local veterinarian Everett, who delivers the ultimate buzzkill: the herd has foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

Everett warns Rip that managing this highly contagious viral illness is a brutal, unpredictable "act of God business." But the Duttons do not believe in coincidence. Because FMD has been eradicated for decades, Rip immediately smells a rat. The disease likely arrived via a new bull purchased at an auction, the very same auction where Beulah Jackson mysteriously stopped bidding to let the Duttons win.

This biological warfare hits at the worst possible moment. Over in Dallas, Beth Dutton is busy doing what she does best: bullying high-end hospitality managers into buying her beef. She secures a massive farm-to-table partnership with a luxury hotel restaurant, only to return home and find Rip staring grimly at a newly infected calf. If the whole herd has to be destroyed, Beth's shiny new business deal is dead before the ink can even dry.

Carter's Bad Decisions and Beulah's Mounting Problems

While the adults worry about the family finances, poor Carter is busy proving he has zero survival instincts. He continues to let Oreana drag him into situations where he is wildly out of his depth. This week, she ropes him into driving her to a girl's house to catch a cheating boyfriend. Carter thinks a little urine on the guy's truck is plenty of payback. Oreana, however, prefers a full-on vandalism spree.

After narrowly avoiding a shootout with the angry boyfriend, the duo gets pulled over by the Sheriff. Oreana unleashes a torrent of teenage attitude, which the Sheriff completely tolerates simply because her last name is Jackson. They get off with a stern warning, he won't let them go again, but Carter’s innocence is officially cooked. Back at home, Oreana slips into something comfortable, pulls out a bag of weed and continues pulling the poor kid down her path.

Meanwhile, Beulah Jackson has plenty of her own headaches. Whitney, the wife of the missing Wes, has been asking way too many questions. When Beulah visits Whitney's trailer at the end of the hour to quiet her down, she finds the place completely empty. Whitney pulled a vanishing act, leaving Beulah to utter the understatement of the night: "This is a problem."

Blood on the Tracks and Hotel Hallways

Beth’s trip to Dallas isn’t just about selling steaks, its also about her first run-in with Joaquin. The smooth-talking newcomer wastes no time letting Beth know she "made an impression" on Beulah during their brief interactions. Knowing Beth, Beulah is lucky to have escaped that interaction with her skin intact.

Back at the ranch, the newest employee, Zachariah, gets a visit from an unhinged woman named Anna who is waving a gun and demanding justice. It turns out Zachariah is harboring a dark secret. He confesses that he was in love with Anna's daughter, Theresa, but they kept it hidden. After a night of heavy drinking, they fought, she ran, and he accidentally killed her while putting his truck in reverse. He claims he found the Lord in jail, but Anna doesn't seem overly impressed by his spiritual awakening.

With the herd facing extinction and a missing person case threatening to blow the valley wide open, Dutton Ranch is firing on all cylinders.
