Piece by Piece: Christina Elmore Joins NBC’s ‘Puzzled’

Woman with curly hair in a beige blouse, sitting by a gold-framed background and curtains, smiling softly. Elegant and serene mood.

NBC just added a major piece to its upcoming development slate, and frankly, it’s the kind of casting news that makes the usual procedural churn feel a little more inspired. Christina Elmore—whom you likely know from her standout turns in The Girls on the Bus and Insecure is officially set to star opposite Damon Wayans Jr. in the network’s high-concept drama pilot, ‘Puzzled.’

The project centers on Mike Brink (Wayans Jr.), a former football star who trades concussions for calculations. Based on Danielle Trussoni’s bestselling novel The Puzzle Master, the story follows Brink after a traumatic brain injury leaves him with Acquired Savant Syndrome. Suddenly, he’s a mathematical wunderkind capable of seeing patterns where the rest of us just see static. Naturally, because this is network television, he doesn't use these powers to retire early in Vegas; he uses them to help the police solve crimes.

The Perfect Counterpart

While Wayans Jr. brings the "damaged genius" energy, Elmore steps in to provide the much-needed grounded authority. She’s set to play Angela, the head of the Atlanta Police Department’s Major Crimes Section. According to character descriptions, Angela is a woman fighting a two-front war: managing high-stakes criminal investigations and raising three children. It’s a role that demands the specific blend of steeliness and warmth that Elmore has mastered throughout her career.

Elmore has a knack for making "competent women" feel human rather than just scripts in a suit. Whether she was navigating the chaotic press trail in The Girls on the Bus or being the voice of reason in Twenties, she brings a gravity that should play well against Wayans Jr.’s more eccentric, puzzle-obsessed protagonist.

Behind the Scenes at NBC

The pilot is being spearheaded by Joey Falco, who serves as writer and executive producer. Joining him is director Jesse Peretz, a veteran whose eye for character-driven storytelling has been seen on everything from Girls to GLOW. With Universal Television backing the project, the pedigree here is solid.

The "gifted consultant" trope is well-worn territory for NBC, but the pairing of Elmore and Wayans Jr. gives ‘Puzzled’ a fighting chance to be more than just another Friday night distraction. It’s a pairing that feels fresh, balancing Elmore’s dramatic depth with Wayans Jr.’s natural charisma.

The success of this one will live or die by the relationship between Brink and Angela. If they can capture the spark suggested by this casting, we might actually have a reason to pick up the remote.

Do you think Christina Elmore and Damon Wayans Jr. have the chemistry to make this procedural work?
