Peter Cullen, the Legendary Voice of Optimus Prime, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor behind Optimus Prime and Eeyore, has died at the age of 85.

Fans of Transformers, animation and television are mourning the loss of a voice that became instantly recognizable to generations. Peter Cullen, best known for bringing the heroic Optimus Prime to life, died Wednesday, August 26, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 85.

Cullen’s agent confirmed his death, while his family shared that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. A cause of death has not been released.

For millions of fans, Cullen was Optimus Prime. He first voiced the Autobot leader in the original 1980s Transformers animated series, creating a performance that would become one of the most recognizable voices in animation history. His deep, commanding delivery gave Optimus Prime a sense of strength and authority while still allowing the character to show compassion and heart.

Cullen continued as Optimus Prime decades after the original cartoon ended. He returned for the Transformers franchise's live-action era beginning with the 2007 movie and continued voicing the character across numerous television series, animated projects and films, including Transformers: Prime, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

But Optimus Prime was far from Cullen’s only beloved character.

Television fans also knew him as the voice of Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh universe. His work as the famously gloomy but lovable donkey introduced his voice to an entirely different generation of viewers. Cullen also voiced Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and contributed vocal work to the 1987 film Predator.

His career stretched across decades, with Cullen lending his distinctive voice to animated series, movies, video games and other projects. He was inducted into the Transformers Hall of Fame in 2010 for his contributions to the franchise.

Cullen’s family is asking fans to honor his memory by following the example he represented both on and off screen.

“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family,” his family said, adding that he remained in the hearts of friends and fans around the world. They encouraged people to remember his legacy through compassion, integrity and loyalty, ending with a message that feels especially fitting for the man who gave Optimus Prime his voice: “Be strong enough to be gentle.”

Peter Cullen leaves behind a legacy that goes far beyond voice acting. His performances helped define characters that became childhood favorites for millions of people, and his voice will continue to be heard every time Optimus Prime rolls onto a screen.

The TV world has lost a true legend, but the characters Peter Cullen brought to life will continue speaking for generations to come.
