Samuel Monroe Jr., ‘Menace II Society’ and ‘The Players Club’ Actor, Dies at 52

Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor whose work included memorable appearances in Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood, Set It Off and The Players Club, has died. He was 52.

News of Monroe's death was shared Thursday, August 27, with journalist Phillip Lewis reporting that the actor's mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed her son's passing. Monroe's death comes after a lengthy and devastating health battle that had left him hospitalized and on life support for months.

Samuel Monroe Jr. Had Been Fighting for His Life for Months

Monroe's family first publicly revealed the seriousness of his condition in April.

His wife, Shawna Stewart, said Monroe had contracted meningitis while working on a project in Las Vegas approximately 18 months earlier. According to Stewart, Monroe visited multiple hospitals but was repeatedly misdiagnosed, allowing the infection to go untreated for months before eventually spreading to his brain and spine.

By April, his condition had deteriorated to the point that he was placed on life support. His health battle became even more complicated after he developed MRSA pneumonia, while his kidneys also began failing and required dialysis.

There were brief signs of improvement along the way. Monroe was at one point able to breathe without the assistance of a ventilator for several hours, and his kidney function improved enough for doctors to discontinue dialysis. Unfortunately, those gains did not last.

His health later declined again, and he returned to life support.

Patton continued asking fans for prayers throughout her son's hospitalization. In late July, she revealed that Monroe had suffered more than 20 seizures over the course of two days and had returned to the ICU after going into cardiac arrest. As recently as August 26, Monroe remained hospitalized as members of his family dealt with disagreements surrounding his medical and financial affairs.

For movie fans who grew up watching some of the defining Black films of the 1990s, Monroe was one of those actors whose face could immediately bring back a scene.

He appeared in the Hughes Brothers' 1993 classic Menace II Society as Ilena's cousin before going on to build a résumé filled with films that remain cultural favorites decades later.

Monroe appeared in 1995's Tales from the Hood and the 1996 comedy Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. That same year, he appeared in F. Gary Gray's Set It Off, starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise. In 1998, Monroe joined another movie that would become a staple of Black cinema: Ice Cube's directorial debut, The Players Club.

His career extended beyond the big screen. Monroe's television credits included appearances on Out All Night and NYPD Blue, and he continued acting in later years, including appearances in the 2023 films Packz and Payment Received.
