Matlock has been a hit this new fall season and we have had an actor from the show as our Performer of the Week a few times. Can you blame us? This week was the season finale and everyone brought their A game of course but for us, Jason Ritter as Julian was a stand out this week.
When Olympia finds the missing documents in Julian’s safety deposit box they have it out in the vault. Julian was very vulnerable in these moments as he was seeing his life flash before his eyes as the realization of jail time was hitting him. Not just the jail time and losing the chance to see his children but I also think the disappointment in Olympia was killing him as well.
Jason was giving us all the emotions in that bank scene. We got confusion, panic, anxious, scared, sick, disbelief and the list goes on and on. I felt for Julian in that moment as he described the reasoning behind his actions and how much he was seeking his father, Senior’s approval and respect. He just wanted his father to see him and would have done anything to make that happen back then. However, what he did was wrong and illegal and in a perfect world he would face the consequences of those actions.
What he was saying was such a difference to the Julian we saw earlier in the episode when he let Senior have a piece of his mind. He told his father about himself and exactly what he thought of him. Too bad Senior got the last word in with that dig about money. Seeing Jason go toe to toe with Beau Bridges was great.
Jason really had us in a chokehold and that is why this week he has earned our Performer of the Week.
HONORABLE MENTION: Peter Krause on 9-1-1.
