The gods may be immortal, but Percy Jackson & The Olympians just proved its casting game is very much alive and thriving. As Disney+ gears up for Season 3, news broke that Holt McCallany has been tapped to play the Titan Atlas, with David Costabile and Jesse L. Martin joining in guest roles. While Atlas may be carrying the weight of the sky, it’s Martin’s casting that carries some real emotional gravity and longtime TV fans are absolutely clocking it.

Season 3 is set to adapt The Titan’s Curse, one of the most beloved (and emotionally chaotic) books in Rick Riordan’s series. That means higher stakes, darker themes, and more complicated family dynamics. Enter Jesse L. Martin as Frederick Chase, Annabeth’s father, a character who has long loomed large in the books but has yet to be fully realized onscreen.

Martin is a quietly brilliant get for Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Best known to TV audiences for Law & Order, The Flash, and Rent, he has a knack for playing layered, principled men who carry regret just beneath the surface. That skill set is tailor-made for Frederick Chase, a military historian whose love for his daughter is undeniable, even if his ability to connect with her is… let’s call it a work in progress.

Frederick isn’t flashy. He’s not a god, monster, or Titan. But his presence is crucial, grounding Annabeth’s story in something painfully human. Casting an actor with Martin’s emotional intelligence signals that the series isn’t treating its mortal characters as narrative afterthoughts. Instead, it’s leaning into the idea that parental relationships can be just as complicated and consequential as divine prophecy.

That’s not to say the other castings aren’t intriguing. Holt McCallany’s Atlas promises a physically imposing and psychologically intense antagonist, while David Costabile’s mysterious Dr. Thorn adds another wildcard to the mix. Still, Martin’s arrival feels like a deliberate move toward richer character work, especially for Annabeth, who continues to be one of the show’s most compelling anchors.

As Percy Jackson & The Olympians matures alongside its audience, Season 3 is shaping up to be its most emotionally resonant yet. Jesse L. Martin stepping into Frederick Chase suggests the series understands that sometimes the most powerful conflicts aren’t fought with swords or lightning bolts but across a dinner table, with years of silence hanging in the air. And honestly? That might hit harder than any Titan ever could.
