Instead of a graying Cillian Murphy looking miserable on a horse, this next-generation spin-off is pivoting to fresh blood. Stranger Things alumnus Charlie Heaton is stepping into the spotlight as an all-grown-up Charles Shelby, the legitimate heir to Tommy’s empire of trauma and tailored three-piece suits.

A Sharp New Look for a Grim New Decade

The first-look image released by the network gives fans a proper gander at Heaton looking remarkably dapper, sporting a slick, retro haircut and an intense glare that suggests he spent his formative years watching his father threaten people with razor blades.

Moving the timeline forward into the 1950s, the upcoming six-part series catches up with Charles roughly a decade after the events of the feature film. He is returning from a brutal stint behind enemy lines in World War II, trying his absolute best to live a normal, quiet life. According to the official logline, Charles has completely severed ties with his family’s illicit businesses. He wants absolutely nothing to do with the Shelby name, the gambling, or the violence.

Good luck with that, Charlie. If six seasons of television taught us anything, it is that trying to leave the Peaky Blinders usually results in a swift reality check and a bullet to the shoulder.

Heaton will not be navigating the post-war ruins of Birmingham alone. He is set to share the screen with Jamie Bell, who reprises his role as Duke Shelby, Tommy’s illegitimate, slightly more ruthless son. Watching the straight-laced Charles clash with his half-brother Duke promises to provide the kind of bitter family friction that made the original show so addictive. The powerhouse cast is rounded out by Lashana Lynch and Jessica Brown Findlay, ensuring that even if the setting has shifted to a post-Blitz reconstruction era, the dramatic weight remains heavy.

Filming is currently underway at Birmingham’s Digbeth Loc Studios under the watchful eye of series creator Steven Knight. While a definitive release date remains under wraps, the six-part drama will eventually air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK before streaming globally to its massive audience on Netflix.
