Lasagna lovers, sarcasm enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever related a little too much to a Monday-hating orange cat have reason to celebrate. Paramount+ has officially greenlit a new original animated series based on the iconic comic strip Garfield, bringing the legendary feline back to television in a brand-new 2D animated format.
The upcoming series, currently titled Garfield (working title), comes from Nickelodeon Animation Studios and will feature the voice of Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian Lamorne Morris as the famously lazy yet endlessly witty cat. Known for his scene-stealing work on New Girl and his Emmy-winning performance in Fargo, Morris stepping into Garfield’s oversized paws feels like a casting choice that understands the assignment.
The new series draws inspiration from the original comic strip created by Jim Davis, which has entertained readers for decades with its blend of dry humor, food obsession, and unapologetic laziness. The show promises to capture Garfield at his most delightfully unbothered, leaning heavily into the character’s signature sarcasm and expertly timed indifference to responsibility.
If the premise sounds simple, that’s because it is and that’s exactly why Garfield works. A cynical cat who would rather nap than function remains endlessly relatable in a world that never stops moving. Expect episodes built around Garfield’s classic antics: tormenting Odie, dodging effort at all costs, and delivering snark with the precision of someone who’s been perfecting the art for nearly half a century.
Behind the scenes, executive producers Dave H. Johnson (Middlemost Post) and John Trabbic III (SpongeBob SquarePants, Middlemost Post) are steering the creative direction. Their animation pedigree suggests the series will lean into energetic storytelling while preserving the comic strip’s laid-back humor.
Garfield’s cultural footprint is hard to overstate. Since debuting in 1978, the franchise has amassed more than 200 million daily comic readers worldwide and built a massive multi-generation fanbase. The character’s recent resurgence across social media and licensing partnerships has only fueled renewed interest in the perpetually hungry cat.
For Paramount+, the series also strengthens its growing slate of kids and family programming. The Garfield show joins upcoming projects like The Elephant & Piggie Show! and The Pigeon Show! Starring the Pigeon, signaling a clear strategy to expand the platform’s animated lineup.
As for Morris, his comedic timing and expressive delivery could be the perfect match for Garfield’s brand of weaponized
laziness. The idea of Winston from New Girl channeling the world’s most sarcastic cat? That already sounds like a good time.
Garfield has survived nearly five decades of pop culture evolution by staying exactly who he is: smug, hungry, and completely uninterested in productivity. If this new series captures even half of that attitude, Paramount+ might just have a very entertaining cat nap on its hands.
