Noah Reid Joins ‘Sheriff Country’ as CBS Sets Up New Medical Spinoff

The Fire Country universe may be getting even bigger, and this time Edgewater is heading to the emergency room.

Noah Reid has joined Sheriff Country Season 2 in a role designed to potentially launch another CBS spinoff. The Schitt’s Creek and The Vampire Lestat star will play Dr. Hudson “Hud” Henshaw, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Edgewater Memorial Hospital, known as Med Edge.

The medical drama is still in early development at CBS, meaning it has not officially been ordered to series. Reid’s appearance on Sheriff Country will introduce Hud to viewers and set up the character who would lead the potential spinoff if the network decides to move forward.

Meet Noah Reid’s Dr. Hud Henshaw

Hud certainly doesn’t sound like your typical television doctor. He was born and raised in Deadwater, an outlaw area outside Edgewater, and is the son of convicted felons. Despite his family background, Hud refused to use money from their drug operation to pay his way through medical school and instead carved out a very different path for himself.

Now the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Med Edge, Hud is charming, quick-witted and rough around the edges. He takes his responsibility as a doctor seriously, but apparently taking an oath to “first do no harm” doesn’t mean he’ll always walk away from a bar fight.

That combination already makes Hud feel right at home in the Fire Country universe, where saving lives and complicated family histories tend to go hand in hand.

Edgewater Is Building Its Own TV Universe

The potential medical drama would mark another expansion of the franchise that began with Fire Country. CBS previously used the flagship series to introduce Morena Baccarin’s Mickey Fox before spinning her character off into Sheriff Country. Now Sheriff Country could perform the same job for Hud.

CBS had already been developing the idea of an Edgewater medical series, with plans to introduce its prospective lead during Sheriff Country’s second season. Reid’s casting finally gives that project a face.

If it moves forward, the still-untitled drama would focus on the medical side of Edgewater, opening another corner of the town beyond the firefighters of Fire Country and the law enforcement stories of Sheriff Country.

The project would be executive produced by Sheriff Country showrunner Matt Lopez alongside Fire Country and Sheriff Country co-creators Max Thieriot, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed also among the executive producers.

Noah Reid Is Having Quite the TV Run

Reid remains best known to many viewers as Patrick Brewer on Schitt’s Creek, but his television résumé has continued growing since the Emmy-winning comedy ended. His recent credits include Outer Range, Murder in a Small Town and AMC’s The Vampire Lestat.

Now he could be trading vampires for hospital scrubs and getting a CBS series of his own in the process. There is still a major step between introducing Hud and CBS officially ordering a medical spinoff, so viewers shouldn’t consider the new series a done deal just yet. But with Reid cast specifically as its prospective lead, Edgewater Memorial Hospital is clearly becoming a much more important part of the Fire Country universe.

Sheriff Country returns for Season 2 on Friday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, followed by Fire Country at 9 p.m. ET.
