Netflix is heading back to school with Prep, a new young adult drama based on Curtis Sittenfeld's bestselling debut novel. The streamer has given the project a straight-to-series order, with Nicole Taylor, the writer behind Netflix's One Day, set to bring the coming-of-age story to television.

Originally published in 2005, Prep follows Lee Fiora, a scholarship student attending Ault, an elite boarding school in New England. Surrounded by wealthy, confident classmates, Lee must navigate friendships, crushes, and the uncomfortable reality of being the outsider in a world where privilege opens doors.

And if high school wasn't already complicated enough, imagine dealing with all that while trying to figure out where you belong among students whose lives couldn't be more different from your own.

Taylor, who also worked on the acclaimed British drama Three Girls, will write, serve as showrunner, and executive produce the half-hour series. Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor will executive produce through Gloria Sanchez Productions, alongside Sittenfeld.

The adaptation has been a long time coming. Sittenfeld's novel became a bestseller more than two decades ago, and the author expressed excitement about finally seeing Lee's story make its way to television. Taylor has also described Prep as her favorite novel, revealing that she has wanted to adapt it for approximately 20 years.

The project joins Netflix's growing collection of young adult dramas, including Ginny & Georgia, Outer Banks, and My Life with the Walter Boys. While those series have their own relationship drama and complicated family dynamics, Prep will bring a different perspective by exploring social class, identity, and the pressure of fitting into an unfamiliar world.

A writers' room is expected to open in January 2027, but Netflix has not announced casting details or a premiere date.

With the creative talent behind One Day involved, Prep could deliver another emotional coming-of-age story that has fans talking long after the credits roll. Now comes the interesting part: finding the actress who can bring Lee Fiora to life.
