Netflix Drops A Different World Sequel Trailer and Hillman College Is Back in Session

Portrait of a woman with curly hair and glasses in a red top, looking over her shoulder against a soft warm blurred background.

Class is officially back in session, and yes, we have questions, feelings and probably way too much nostalgia. Netflix has finally dropped the official trailer for its highly anticipated A Different World sequel series, giving fans their first real look at the new generation of Hillman College students and the familiar faces returning to make sure this campus still feels like home. The sequel premieres September 24, 2026, bringing the beloved HBCU sitcom back nearly four decades after the original series debuted.

And before anybody starts clutching their pearls over the word "sequel," this isn't simply a nostalgia trip with the original cast popping in for five minutes and waving goodbye. The new series centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at the very same Hillman College where her parents made their mark. She has a famous family name to live up to, but judging from this trailer, Deborah is much more interested in creating her own story.

Played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah arrives at Hillman ready for a fresh start, but being the daughter of two of the school's most recognizable alumni comes with a little baggage. The trailer introduces her to a new group of friends, new challenges and the kind of college experiences that made the original A Different World such a beloved part of television history.

The new class includes Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir and Kennedi Reece as Hazel, giving Hillman a whole new crew to follow. The trailer makes it clear that while the setting may be familiar, these students aren't simply carbon copies of the characters who came before them. They have their own personalities, ambitions, friendships and, naturally, their own questionable decisions. Because what is college without at least a few decisions that make you yell at your television?

Now let's get to the part that had longtime fans sitting up a little straighter. The sequel isn't leaving the legacy characters behind. Kadeem Hardison returns as Dwayne Wayne and Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, while Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell and Jada Pinkett Smith are also back in their respective roles. Debbie Allen, who was one of the defining creative forces behind the original series, returns as an executive producer and will direct three episodes, including the premiere.

The trailer gives us glimpses of those familiar faces alongside the new cast, and honestly, seeing Hillman again hits a very specific nostalgic nerve. But the returning stars aren't simply there to recreate old storylines. The new series is using them to connect the history of Hillman College with the students who are now creating its next chapter.

And yes, we absolutely plan on noticing every single cameo.

There is always a little pressure when Hollywood decides to revisit a beloved classic, and A Different World is no exception. The original series ran from 1987 to 1993 and became known for combining comedy with stories about college life, relationships, identity, social issues and the experience of attending an HBCU.

Netflix's sequel is stepping into that legacy while putting a new generation at the center. Showrunner Felicia Pride leads the series, with Debbie Allen executive producing alongside the creative team. Allen also directed the premiere, giving the new series a direct connection to the original show's creative DNA.

The trailer suggests the series is aiming for that familiar blend of friendship, romance, humor and growing pains while allowing Deborah and her classmates to establish their own Hillman experience. In other words, Netflix isn't trying to convince us that 2026 is 1987. Thank goodness.

As if seeing Hillman again wasn't enough, Netflix also brought in Brandy to perform a new version of the iconic A Different World opening theme. The original song has been performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin and Boyz II Men, so Brandy stepping into the role is a pretty major full-circle moment.

That little musical touch may end up being one of the smartest choices the sequel has made. It gives longtime fans something instantly recognizable while still allowing the new series to put its own stamp on the opening.

Basically, Netflix knows exactly which nostalgia buttons to push, and apparently we are pressing all of them.

The new A Different World premieres Thursday, September 24, 2026, exclusively on Netflix. The 10-episode first season follows Deborah and her fellow freshmen as they begin their lives at Hillman College and figure out what it means to become young adults on their own terms.

There is also a pretty perfect bit of television history attached to that premiere date. The Netflix sequel arrives exactly 39 years after the original A Different World debuted on NBC on September 24, 1987. Talk about making an entrance.

The new trailer certainly has us curious. There is enough familiar Hillman energy to make longtime fans feel at home, but enough new faces and storylines to suggest this isn't simply an attempt to recreate the past. Deborah Wayne has a legacy to carry, but she also has her own world to build.

Hillman College is back, the new class has officially arrived and Netflix just gave us another reason to clear our September calendars. If this trailer is any indication, A Different World may be about to introduce Hillman to an entirely new generation while giving longtime fans exactly the reunion they have been waiting for.

Bring on September 24. We have class.
