Netflix isn't finished exploring the romantic history of the Bridgerton family. The streaming giant announced Thursday, October 8, that a new limited prequel series is in development, this time putting Violet Bridgerton and her late husband, Edmund, at the center of the love story.

While Bridgerton has spent four seasons following the romantic adventures of Violet's children, viewers have only heard pieces of the marriage that started it all. Now, the woman who has spent years guiding her children through London's complicated marriage market will finally have her own story told.

Violet and Edmund's Romance Takes Center Stage

The upcoming series will follow a younger Violet and her relationship with Edmund Bridgerton, the man she eventually marries and with whom she has eight children. Their marriage has long served as an example of genuine love within the Bridgerton universe, particularly for a family navigating a society where wealth, titles, and reputation often influence romantic decisions.

Viewers already know how Violet and Edmund's marriage ends, making this an interesting direction for the franchise. Edmund's death left Violet to raise their children without him, and his absence has remained an important part of the family's history. Instead of focusing on what Violet lost, the prequel will have an opportunity to explore what she experienced before that heartbreak.

The series also offers a chance to see Violet outside her familiar role as the family's endlessly concerned mother. Before she was worrying about Anthony's responsibilities, Benedict's choices, or which of her children might be walking down the aisle next, she was a young woman with her own romantic future ahead of her.

And considering how determined Violet has been to see her children find meaningful relationships, discovering exactly what made her marriage so special could provide some valuable context.

Shonda Rhimes Returns to Expand the Bridgerton Universe

Shonda Rhimes will co-write and serve as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Nicholas Nardini. Betsy Beers and longtime Bridgerton director Tom Verica are also attached as executive producers, with Netflix and Shondaland

producing the series.

This won't be Rhimes' first trip into the franchise's past. She previously created Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which followed the young queen's relationship with King George while exploring the lives of other familiar characters. That series also introduced viewers to a younger Violet Ledger, played by Connie Jenkins-Greig, offering an earlier look at the woman who would eventually become Lady Bridgerton.

Netflix has not announced casting for the new prequel, so it remains unclear who will portray Violet and Edmund. Ruth Gemmell currently plays the Bridgerton matriarch in the flagship series, while Rupert Evans previously portrayed Edmund.

Violet's Story Has Already Been Changing

The announcement arrives after a particularly significant fourth season for Violet, whose relationship with Lord Marcus Anderson introduced a different side of the character. After spending years grieving Edmund and concentrating on her children, Violet began exploring the possibility of another romantic relationship. Although her connection with Marcus developed into an engagement, she ultimately decided she wasn't ready to marry again, choosing to focus on discovering what she wanted from this stage of her life.

That development makes the prequel especially interesting. Audiences have watched Violet consider a future beyond her first marriage, and now they will get to see the beginnings of the relationship that played such a significant role in shaping her life. The two stories could offer very different perspectives on the same woman, one discovering love for the first time and the other learning that her life can continue changing long after losing it.

What's Next for Bridgerton?

The prequel announcement comes as production continues on Bridgerton Season 5, which is scheduled to premiere in 2027. The upcoming season will shift attention to Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza, as the series explores their developing romance.

Netflix has also renewed the flagship series for a sixth season, ensuring that the Bridgerton family will have plenty more opportunities to complicate its own romantic affairs. As for Violet and Edmund's prequel, Netflix has not announced a premiere date, episode count, or cast. The project is officially moving forward, but additional details about production and its release remain under wraps.

For a franchise that has made an entire business out of complicated courtships, passionate declarations, and the occasional disastrous matchmaking attempt, returning to the marriage that started the Bridgerton family feels like a natural next chapter. The real question is whether Violet and Edmund's romance can live up to the legendary love story their children have spent years hearing about.
