A Different World Season 2: 8 Original Characters Who Need to Return

Hillman College is officially staying open for another season, and while Netflix's A Different World has introduced a new generation worth rooting for, there's still some unfinished business with the old crowd. The first season brought back several familiar faces, including Whitley, Dwayne, Ron, Freddie, Kim, Jaleesa, and Colonel Taylor, among others. Seeing these characters decades later was a reminder that the original series left behind more than a collection of memorable television moments.

With Netflix renewing the sequel for Season 2, it's time to start thinking about who else might walk through Hillman's doors. The show certainly doesn't need to become a weekly reunion special, but a few well-placed appearances could bring new complications, family history, and plenty of entertainment. And considering that finale, there's one character whose return feels practically mandatory.

1. Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet)

Let's start with the obvious one, because Netflix can't introduce Denise Huxtable's son, have Dwayne secretly reach out to her, and expect everyone to forget about it. Season 1 revealed that Ellington is Denise's son, putting one of the original show's most important characters right back in the middle of Hillman's business.

Having Lisa Bonet return would be a major moment, but the real attraction is what Denise could bring to the story now. Her relationship with Dwayne, her perspective on Ellington's romance with Deborah, and her connection to the school all offer opportunities for meaningful scenes. We'd also love to know where life has taken her since those early days at Hillman.

2. Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad)

There's something especially appealing about bringing Clair Huxtable back into the story. She's a Hillman alumna, Ellington's grandmother, and a woman who never needed to raise her voice very much to make somebody realize they'd made a terrible decision.

Phylicia Rashad could bring both warmth and authority to the sequel, particularly if the college continues confronting its financial problems. Imagine Clair sitting across from Dwayne, demanding answers about the school's future. Better yet, give her a scene with Whitley. Those two characters have enough personality between them to make even a polite conversation entertaining.

3. Walter Oakes (Sinbad)

Coach Walter Oakes was a major part of the original show's personality, bringing humor and a genuine interest in the students who crossed his path. Seeing him again would be particularly meaningful, especially with Hillman's athletics program playing a role in the new series.

We wouldn't need some elaborate storyline to justify his return. A visit to campus, a conversation with the current coach, or even a reunion with Jaleesa could be enough. Sinbad's return would be wonderful to see if his health and circumstances allowed it, and the writers could build something worthwhile around a brief appearance.

4. Vanessa Huxtable (Tempestt Bledsoe)

Vanessa doesn't have the same direct relationship with Hillman as Denise, but that's part of what makes her an interesting possibility. The new series has already established a connection to the Huxtable family through Ellington, and bringing another member of that family into the picture could help expand his world.

We'd especially enjoy seeing Vanessa as the aunt who knows more family history than Ellington might want revealed. There is plenty of room to explore what she's doing today without turning her appearance into an extended trip down memory lane.

5. Millie (Marie-Alise Recasner)

Now we're getting into the characters longtime fans would have a great time seeing again. Millie was part of Whitley's early Hillman experience, and bringing her back could open the door to some entertaining conversations about just how much Whitley has changed.

Deborah has grown up knowing her mother as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, but imagine hearing about the Whitley who was once a college student herself. A former roommate would have stories, and we have a feeling Whitley wouldn't appreciate every single one of them being shared.

6. Shazza Zulu (Gary Dourdan)

Shazza was one of those characters who could turn just about any conversation into a discussion about society, identity, or personal responsibility. Sometimes he had a point, and other times you wanted somebody to tell him to relax for five minutes.

Bringing Gary Dourdan back would be particularly entertaining because Freddie and Ron are already part of the sequel. Their romantic history with Shazza could provide some comedy, but we'd be even more interested in discovering what he's become. Is he still challenging everybody's worldview, or has life forced him to reconsider a few of his own opinions?

7. Maggie Lauten (Marisa Tomei)

Maggie was part of the original show's first season before A Different World underwent the creative changes that helped establish its identity. Her departure meant viewers never got to follow her beyond that early chapter of Hillman life.

Marisa Tomei returning would be a delightful surprise, particularly alongside Denise. Imagine two former roommates reconnecting decades later and comparing what they thought adulthood would look like with how things actually turned out. It wouldn't need to be a major storyline, but it could offer a sweet reminder of where this television universe began.

8. Martin Kendall (Joseph C. Phillips)

With Ellington now established as Denise's son, there's another family connection worth exploring: Martin Kendall. The original Cosby Show introduced Martin as Denise's husband, and their relationship became a major part of her story after she left Hillman.

We don't yet know exactly what the current family dynamics look like, which gives the writers plenty of possibilities. Is Martin still part of Denise's life? What relationship does he have with Ellington? Bringing Joseph C. Phillips back could answer some lingering questions while adding another familiar face to the growing Huxtable family story.

The Legacy Matters, But The New Generation Comes First

One of the smartest decisions Netflix made with A Different World was allowing the new students to have problems, relationships, and personalities that don't depend entirely on their parents' history. Deborah, Shaquille, Rashida, Hazel, Amir, and Kojo deserve the opportunity to build the same kind of audience connection that made the original Hillman students so memorable.

That's why we'd rather see legacy characters return with something meaningful to contribute than watch familiar actors appear simply for applause. Denise could help develop Ellington's story, Walter could reconnect with Hillman's athletic community, and someone like Shazza could create interesting friction with the adults he once knew as students.

There are also characters who deserve acknowledgment even though they can no longer return. Theo Huxtable's influence has already been woven into Ellington's story through their shared experience with dyslexia.

Following Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death in 2025, that connection carries an added emotional significance. It's a reminder that honoring a show's past sometimes means recognizing the people who are no longer here. Netflix hasn't announced a Season 2 premiere date or confirmed which additional legacy characters will appear.

For now, we're keeping our fingers crossed that Hillman's next semester includes a few more familiar faces, beginning with the woman whose son has already managed to complicate the Wayne family's life.

And seriously, after that finale, we'd better find out what Dwayne needed to discuss with Denise.
