Nolan Goes North: Nathan Fillion Filmed for New Rookie Spinoff as Franchise Expands

The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley has officially confirmed that Nathan Fillion has filmed for the pilot of the highly anticipated spinoff, The Rookie: North. While the flagship series continues to dominate Tuesday nights, this new expansion aims to prove that the "oldest rookie" formula has plenty of life left provided you add a little Washington state drizzle.

A Cold Start in Pierce County

Set in the rugged terrain of Pierce County, Washington, The Rookie: North ditches the palm trees of Los Angeles for something a bit more evergreen. The series stars Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who, much like Nolan before him, decides to reinvent his life by joining the police force at an age when most people are considering ergonomic office chairs.

The pilot, which recently wrapped production, isn't just testing the waters; it’s building a bridge. Hawley confirmed that Fillion’s John Nolan appears in the opening episode to pass the metaphorical baton. It’s a smart move by ABC using the charisma of the franchise’s foundation to ensure fans feel right at home in a brand-new precinct.

The Cast: From Insecure to On Patrol

If the setting change doesn't grab you, the cast might. Jay Ellis is a proven lead, and seeing him trade the drama of Insecure for the tactical gear of a trainee is a highlight. Joining him is Janet Montgomery as Charlotte Dru, his no-nonsense Training Officer. Rounding out the precinct are Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, and Malik Watson.

The vibe here is intentionally different. While the original series leans into the sun-drenched glam of California crime, North promises a mix of urban coast policing and rural forest patrols. It’s essentially The Rookie meets Twin Peaks, but with fewer log ladies and more paperwork.

The Verdict So Far

By filming Fillion for the pilot, the production is banking on the "Nolan Effect" to launch a successful second spinoff after The Rookie: Feds didn't quite stick the landing. Hawley’s plan for two to three crossovers per season suggests a shared universe that feels connected without being codependent.

With a series order decision expected from ABC by mid-May, the momentum is clearly behind the "North" expansion. It turns out that being the "new guy" is a career path that never truly goes out of style.
