Euphoria Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: Rue’s Dangerous Game Intensifies

Young woman with curly hair looks up, appearing thoughtful, in front of a neon "Silver Slipper" sign. Warm lighting sets a moody scene.

The episode picks up where Episode 3 left off, with Rue (Zendaya) being stopped by the police. At the station, detectives interrogate her about Laurie (Martha Kelly), even showing her a photo of herself in Mexico with cartel members. After discovering drugs in her car, they pressure Rue into becoming an informant in exchange for a reduced—or possibly eliminated, sentence.

They install an app on her phone that allows them to track and record her, with calls disguised as “Mom” to avoid suspicion. The police also replace Rue’s drugs with laxatives and sugar pills, hoping that once Alamo realizes the product is fake, he’ll contact Laurie and expose their operation.

Rue returns to the club and hands the fake drugs to Big Eddy (Kadeem Hardison). Meanwhile, Nate’s (Jacob Elordi) severed toe has been surgically repaired, and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) is seen caring for him. When she asks how much money he owes Naz, Nate admits it’s around $1 million. That revelation is enough for Cassie, she declares the fairy tale over, packs her things, and leaves. Outside, Maddy (Alexa Demie) picks her up, and says they need to do something about her look.

Creative Tension and Cracks in the Group

Lexi (Maude Apatow) hires Jules (Hunter Schafer) to create a painting for her television show, giving her a few details and creative freedom. Jules delivers a raw, provocative piece featuring nude women with penises, but Lexi’s boss demands all nudity be removed. She harshly reprimands Lexi, emphasizing the financial loss caused by production delays. Shaken, Lexi steps away to compose herself. Though Jules initially agrees to revise the painting, she ultimately rejects the compromise, smearing red paint across it and walking out.

Elsewhere, Laurie’s operation quietly continues as she and her crew bury her dead bird. Rue later updates Detective Jimenez, explaining that Alamo and Laurie are no longer working together. The detective warns that if Rue is no longer useful, she could still face prison time. Thinking quickly, Rue offers to find a different buyer.

At the pool, Rue joins Lexi, Maddy, and Cassie. While Maddy takes photos of Cassie, Rue asks her to get her drugs for a “friend,” but Maddy refuses. Lexi voices her frustration with everything happening Cassie selling herself online and Rue asking for drugs and directly questions whether Rue has relapsed. Rue denies it, but Lexi seems doubtful.

Escalation, Chaos, and Closing Thoughts

Nate attempts to present an architectural proposal at a city council meeting, delivering an emotional pitch, but the motion is denied, sending him into a breakdown. Meanwhile, Cassie pawns her wedding ring and rents her own apartment in Lexi’s building, marking a clean break from Nate.

Back at the club, Rue plays cards with Alamo while secretly recording him. She suggests they start sourcing drugs from her old contacts in Mexico, which raises suspicion. When Alamo questions her, Rue covers by admitting to a “slip-up.”

Rue replaces Angel’s name on her locker with that of a new girl, Kitty, as we learn Angel has disappeared after fleeing rehab. A montage introduces Kitty’s fast immersion into the club’s environment, showing her having sex with a customer while his friends watched.

Later, Maddy takes Cassie to a party to get her noticed by Brandon Fontaine (Jeff Wahlberg). Cassie ends up dancing on a table, making out with one of Maddy’s former influencer clients, and catching Brandon’s attention. After doing a line of cocaine, she shifts from uneasy to euphoric. She and Brandon end up in a bedroom together and Maddy and some guys barge in, catching them on camera.

Back at the club, Rue speaks with Kitty in the bathroom, sensing her discomfort and asking if she’s being forced into this life. Kitty tearfully insists she isn’t, though the moment suggests otherwise. Magick (Rosalía), who overhears, later tells Big Eddy she doesn’t trust Rue.

When Detective Jimenez calls (under the “Mom” label), he warns Rue that her cover may be blown and instructs her to discredit Magick. Their confrontation quickly escalates just as armed robbers storm into Big Eddy’s office. After shooting him in the side and threatening further violence, they force him to open the safe and escaped with everything in it.

Rue calls Bishop for help as she tries to help Big Eddy. The security footage reveals the getaway driver: Faye (Chloe Cherry). Rue confirms that Faye works for Laurie.

Overall, the episode is packed with action and suspense, but it still lacks some of the elements we loved in earlier seasons. The heavy old Hollywood/cowboy aesthetic continues to feel disconnected from the modern setting, and the absence of Labrinth is noticeable in the score. While the drama is high, it’s unclear if this new stylized direction is resonating with fans who loved the show’s original style and tone.

Season 4 of Euphoria is currently streaming on HBO Max.
