Murderbot Season 2 Officially Confirmed by Apple TV Plus: Everything You Need to Know

A person in futuristic armor looks intently off-camera. The background is blurred and bright, with muted tones of beige and gray.

If you’ve ever wanted a sarcastic robot with commitment issues to become your best friend, congratulations. You’re not alone. Fans of Murderbot, the moody, media-obsessed cyborg from Martha Wells’ beloved The Murderbot Diaries, can finally breathe easy. Apple TV Plus just renewed Murderbot for Season 2, and it is officially the best decision they’ve made since giving Severance a second season.

We’ll dive into why this sci fi gem got a well deserved renewal, what we know about Season 2 so far, and why Murderbot is quietly becoming the most relatable character on TV. Spoiler alert: it mostly just wants to watch soap operas and avoid people. Same.

What is Murderbot and Why Should You Care?

If you’re new here, Murderbot is based on The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells, a Hugo and Nebula award-winning saga that combines space travel, corporate dystopias, and dry robotic humor in a way that’s dangerously addictive. The story follows a Security Unit—self-named Murderbot—who hacks its own governor module, escapes control, and proceeds to spend an alarming amount of time watching serial dramas while begrudgingly saving humans from themselves.

Think The Mandalorian meets The Office but with more existential dread and fewer hugs.

The show premiered on Apple TV Plus in May 2025, starring Alexander Skarsgård as the voice and face (sort of) of our favorite antihero android. Critics loved it. Fans loved it. And now, it’s coming back for more.

Season 2 Is Official: Here’s What We Know

Apple TV Plus made the announcement just one day before the Season 1 finale, and honestly, that was a power move. The show has been steadily building buzz, making it one of the platform’s sleeper hits this summer. According to Apple’s head of programming, Season 2 will dive deeper into Murderbot’s backstory and explore more of the galactic corporate nightmare that is its universe.

Here’s what’s confirmed so far:

  • Renewal Date: Officially announced July 10, 2025

  • Platform: Streaming exclusively on Apple TV Plus

  • Cast: Alexander Skarsgård returns, along with most of the Season 1 crew

  • Plot Teasers: Hints of more action, deeper emotional arcs, and yes, even more episodes of Murderbot’s favorite in-universe soap opera

While no release date has been set for Season 2 yet, if Apple keeps to its current timeline, we can likely expect new episodes by mid to late 2026. So yes, start counting the days. Or just rewatch Season 1. Repeatedly.

Why Murderbot Works: Snark, Sci Fi, and Sad Robots

What sets Murderbot apart from your typical robot-gone-rogue story is its complete disinterest in becoming human. It doesn’t want to find love, it doesn’t want to lead a rebellion, and it really doesn’t want to go on a journey of self discovery unless that journey involves sitting alone in a maintenance closet with a datapad full of streaming shows.

This makes Murderbot the most accidentally relatable character on television. It’s introverted, awkward, efficient, and emotionally unavailable. In other words, it's basically the collective personality of the internet.

The show’s tone walks a fine line between biting social commentary and dry comedy, all set against a backdrop of thrilling space drama. It tackles themes like autonomy, identity, and corporate greed without ever getting too preachy. And when the action hits, it hits. Violently and with great cinematic flair.

Apple TV Plus has quietly become the streaming home for high concept science fiction. Between Foundation, Silo, Invasion, and now Murderbot, the platform is building a solid reputation for genre content that looks good and actually makes you think.

What Fans Can Expect from Murderbot Season 2

Season 1 only scratched the surface of Martha Wells’ universe. Season 2 is expected to adapt more of the novellas, introducing new characters, new locations, and much higher emotional stakes for our favorite misanthropic mech.

We’re talking:

  • More complicated human feelings Murderbot would rather ignore

  • Bigger fights with morally bankrupt corporations

  • More media bingeing in between violent rescue missions

  • Possibly even some character growth, though Murderbot would definitely object

It’s going to be chaotic, hilarious, and probably a little heartbreaking. Basically, everything we signed up for.

In a world full of recycled plots and paint-by-numbers protagonists, Murderbot stands out. It’s weird, it’s smart, it’s funny, and it taps into that deep human desire to be left alone with our screens. The fact that it got renewed for a second season is not just good news for sci fi fans—it’s a win for quality storytelling.

So if you haven’t jumped on the Murderbot train yet, now’s your chance. Season 1 is streaming on Apple TV Plus, and Season 2 is officially on the way. You have time to catch up before the robots come back with even more attitude.

And hey, if Murderbot can grow (slightly) as a person, maybe we all can.

Stay tuned for updates on release dates, trailers, and plot reveals. And remember: emotions are annoying, but good sci fi is forever.
