“No one is safe.” That’s exactly the vibe Mortal Kombat 2 brings and honestly, it delivers way more than I expected. I had the chance to attend an early screening, and this movie is a full-on, nonstop thrill ride that leans hard into what fans love.
I will say the opening few minutes feel a bit rushed. The pacing is quick, like the film is trying to set everything up as fast as possible. But once it locks in, it really finds its groove. The tournament we’ve been waiting for is finally happening, and Shao Kahn is ready to dominate at any cost, while Lord Raiden gathers Earthrealm’s champions for the fight.
The biggest standout here is Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. He absolutely steals the movie. This version of Johnny starts off older, washed-up, and doubting himself, which is a fun twist. Watching him slowly grow into the cocky, chaotic fighter we know from the games is easily one of the best parts of the film.
We’re also introduced to Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph, and her story is surprisingly emotional. Her backstory with Shao Kahn adds real depth, and she ends up being more important than I expected. I’m definitely excited to see where her character goes next.
Another standout is Jade, played by Tati Gabrielle. She’s an amazing fighter who struggles with choosing the right side. Her storyline with Kitana is a bright spot. They’re best friends, but the film also introduces a “found sister” dynamic, which is a nice touch.
Returning fighters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Jax Briggs all get solid moments, while fan favorites like Scorpion, Baraka, and Noob Saibot bring the chaos. The fights are brutal, the fatalities are satisfying, and the movie doesn’t hold back.
Overall, Mortal Kombat 2 is exactly what it needed to be, loud, violent, and fun. It’s not perfect, but it absolutely delivers as a summer blockbuster and a love letter to fans.
Mortal Kombat 2 releases in cinemas Friday, May 8, 2026.
