MobLand Season 2 Premiere Recap: The Harrigans Are Falling Apart From the Inside
Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for MobLand Season 2, Episode 1, “I Wanna Be Your Dog.”
The Harrigans survived their war with the Stevensons, but winning clearly did not bring this family any peace. MobLand returned for Season 2 with “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” and the Harrigan empire is already facing a potentially bigger threat than the enemies it fought last season: itself.
Conrad and Kevin are on opposite sides of a growing family divide, Maeve is keeping secrets, Seraphina is making moves of her own, and Harry Da Souza is once again stuck trying to keep everyone alive. Meanwhile, Kat McAllister hasn’t forgotten about the Harrigans, and she is beginning to turn their fractured relationships into an opportunity.
Conrad and Maeve Turn a Business Meeting Into a Bloodbath
The season wastes very little time getting back to business as Conrad and Maeve head to the dog track for a meeting with Turkish gangster Gakbu. Instead of Gakbu, however, his brother Luca arrives, and Conrad soon discovers there is a much bigger reason behind Gakbu’s absence.
Gakbu has approached Kevin about doing business, viewing Conrad as yesterday’s news while the younger Harrigan is increasingly willing to operate independently of his father. Conrad does not exactly take the news calmly, and what begins as a sit-down quickly turns into a massacre when he and Maeve open fire.
The shooting leaves Gakbu’s men dead and Conrad wounded, creating another disaster for Harry to clean up. Making matters worse, Harry didn’t even know the meeting was happening because Maeve deliberately kept him out of the loop over concerns about how close he has become to Kevin.
That decision tells Harry just how fractured the Harrigan operation has become. He is supposed to be the fixer keeping the family out of trouble, but the people he works for are now creating problems without even giving him the opportunity to stop them.
Harry Realizes the Harrigans Are in Serious Trouble
Paul describes what is happening within the family as a “death spiral,” and Harry quickly reaches a similar conclusion. Conrad and Kevin are no longer simply having a father-son disagreement; their feud has created an opening that the Harrigans’ enemies can exploit.
Harry tries to make Conrad understand that somebody appears to be deliberately encouraging the division between him and Kevin. Gakbu suddenly choosing Kevin over Conrad looks less like a random business decision and more like someone nudging both men closer to war.
Conrad isn’t particularly interested in repairing things with his son, and Kevin isn’t rushing to reconcile with his father either. When Harry later speaks with Kevin, he again warns that outside forces could be using the family’s infighting against them, but Kevin remains confident he can handle himself.
Harry, however, is beginning to see the bigger picture. The Harrigans are surrounded by enemies at exactly the moment when everyone inside the family is trying to build their own power base.
Jan Wants Out of Her Marriage to Harry
Harry’s problems aren’t limited to the Harrigans because his own family is falling apart too. He and Jan begin the episode in therapy following everything that happened last season, including Jan stabbing him and Gina leaving home.
Gina left behind a message for her mother that makes her feelings about Harry painfully clear. Jan has reached the point where Harry loving her and Gina is no longer enough to make up for the danger and violence that have become part of their everyday lives.
Jan eventually tells Harry that she wants a divorce. Harry barely has time to process the end of his marriage before Harrigan business pulls him away again, which only reinforces the problem Jan has been trying to make him see.
For Harry, the contradiction is becoming impossible to ignore. He spends nearly every waking moment protecting another family while his own family continues to suffer because of that loyalty.
A Witness Creates Another Problem for Harry
Conrad and Maeve’s dog-track rampage also produces a problem they didn’t anticipate when a waiter named Dean goes to the police. He tells DCI Kavanagh what he witnessed, potentially giving law enforcement a direct account of Conrad’s involvement in the killings.
Harry learns what happened through Finch, his contact inside the police, and quickly tracks Dean down. Rather than killing him, Harry threatens him into returning to the station and changing his story, instructing him to claim Gakbu forced him into making the original statement.
It is another example of Harry doing what he does best: containing the damage after somebody else makes a reckless decision. The difference this time is that there are increasingly too many disasters happening at once for even Harry to keep under control.
What Is Maeve Planning With Eddie?
Harry is also becoming suspicious of Maeve, so he has Zosia follow her when she heads into London. That decision uncovers another secret operation taking place behind his back.
Maeve meets with Eddie, who hands her £30,000 as her share of a scheme he has been running with Gina. Eddie explains that he and Gina have been approaching wealthy social media personalities and offering them protection in exchange for money.
Maeve has bigger ambitions for Eddie and doesn’t want Gina involved in whatever comes next. She tells Eddie she wants Gina in the rearview mirror before their next meeting and also expects considerably more money the next time he comes to her.
The conversation adds another dangerous wrinkle to Harry’s problems. His daughter isn’t simply missing anymore; she has become involved in a criminal operation with Eddie while Maeve is actively trying to push her out of the picture.
Seraphina Makes Her Own Deal With Kat McAllister
Conrad and Kevin aren’t the only Harrigans thinking about the future because Seraphina is beginning to make her own move. She approaches Kat McAllister following a speech and makes it clear that she believes Conrad’s time at the top should come to an end.
Kat is willing to entertain the idea, but her help comes at an enormous price. She wants half of the Harrigans’ revenue for five years, while Seraphina attempts to negotiate the arrangement down to four. Kat then gives Seraphina a way to contact her and makes it clear she expects information from inside the family. That potentially gives Kat exactly what she needs: someone with direct access to the Harrigans who is ambitious enough to help weaken Conrad from within.
Seraphina may believe she is using Kat to build her own future, but Kat is playing a much larger game. The more Harrigans she can pull in different directions, the less work she has to do herself.
Harry Learns Kat Is Behind the Kevin and Conrad Divide
Harry’s suspicions eventually lead him directly to Gakbu. After dealing with the Turkish gangster and his remaining men, Harry confirms what he had already begun to suspect about the attempt to pull Kevin away from Conrad.
Kat McAllister is behind it.
That revelation changes the situation because Harry now knows the family’s internal war isn’t developing in isolation. Kat is actively feeding the divisions that already exist, recognizing that the easiest way to destroy the Harrigans might be to convince them to destroy one another.
The trouble is that knowing what Kat is doing doesn’t automatically give Harry a way to stop her. Conrad distrusts Kevin, Kevin wants to prove he doesn’t need his father, Seraphina is secretly talking to Kat, and Maeve is running her own side operation with Eddie.
‘MobLand’ Season 2 Premiere Ending Explained: Who Is Frankie?
Kat’s plan gets another potentially important piece when Colin Tattersall approaches her with an idea. Instead of simply attacking the Harrigans, he proposes finding someone Kat can quietly build into a major player in London’s criminal world.
Tattersall describes the person he has in mind as a kind of “paladin,” someone who could operate for Kat much the way Harry operates for the Harrigans. With enough support, that person could eventually become powerful enough to challenge or even replace the Harrigans without Kat having to publicly involve herself.
The final scene introduces Frankie, played by Johnny Flynn, as Tattersall’s potential choice. Tattersall approaches him while Frankie is outside cooking, and their brief exchange immediately positions the newcomer as someone who is likely to matter well beyond the premiere.
Frankie’s introduction also gives Kat another possible weapon while Harry’s side becomes more fractured by the minute. She could soon have Seraphina feeding her information from inside the family while Frankie grows into a threat from the outside.
By the end of the premiere, Harry understands that a war against the Harrigans has already begun, but almost everyone around him remains focused on their personal battles. Kat doesn’t need to create the Harrigans’ weaknesses because they’ve already done that themselves; she only needs to figure out exactly where to apply pressure.
That leaves Harry facing a familiar job under much worse circumstances. He has to keep the Harrigans together long enough to fight an enemy who appears perfectly happy to let the family tear itself apart first.
