Two women conversing in a church. One wears a blue coat, holding a matching bag, the other carries bags. Candles lit in the background.

Nothing but perfection yet again for this week’s episode of Matlock. This week really feels like we are moving a little outside of the Matty/Olympia friendship angst to our supporting cast and the overall arc that is happening in the world around them. Not to say that we have moved on from that week, but we get some good advancement for the Jacobson-Moore arc and a some movement for Sarah and Julian’s character progression.

Our case of the week is focused on a group of nuns from a local church that offers aid and support to the houseless community in New York. They offer many different resources, but they are currently being zoned for new buildings. They want to fight this so that they can continue to serve their community; of course, it is not as simple as that because this is Matlock. Matty and Olympia discover that they offer help to addicts in the vain of harm reduction and offer services such as Narcan for overdosing. On one hand, the work is realistically very valuable and life-saving for some; but on the other hand, this make their case a thousand times harder to fight. And that leads to the time jumps throughout this week’s episode, since the case is going to trial, we have multiple “1 week later” time jumps until we reach closure on the case and on our other main storylines this week. And Matty has very strong feelings about this due to the experience she had throughout her daughter’s addiction. Although at times, this storyline was hard to hear about and watch, it is something that happens very often in the real world and it brings even more of a struggle onto Matty’s character.

As I have mentioned in previous week’s reviews/recaps, I constantly want more for Sarah and I really am excited to say that we are getting even more development this week. Last week she told Senior that if he ever needed anything to “let her know” and to most, that probably seemed like a throwaway line, but I assumed that we would circle back to that, and this is that episode. He asks Sarah to find a way to get pictures of Julian’s datebook back to him as he is suspicious that Julian is going to poach clientele from Jacobson-Moore. In trying to start small talk with Julian, Sarah inadvertently causes him to fall down the stairs and injure himself. The dynamic between Julian and Sarah and their potential friendship that is blossoming was nice to see and an unexpected dynamic that I did not think we would ever get. Throughout this, we can see Sarah’s internal struggle with the matter, while also wanting to make sure to keep Senior happy. But as we find out, Senior has bigger problems to worry about; his ex-wife, Eva has returned for this week’s episode and she is planning to stage a coup and have Senior ousted from the company. I really hope that this works out because the downfall for so many characters if this does not go the right way, I also selfishly want it to work out because as a character, Senior gives me nothing to root for, and from what we know about him, he is an awful person.

Lastly, of course I could not do a Matlock review without talking about Matty and Olympia’s friendship dynamic. Skye and Kathy continue to show us why this show deserves every award in the book. The subtleties and nuance within their characters and in their acting is amazingly done every single week and this episode is no different. This week they are both trying to work on giving the other space, which proves to be very difficult when a) they work together daily and b) they do genuinely and deeply care about each other. They can no longer deny these facts, but also, just because two things can be true at once, does not mean that they can just forgive and forget what has gone on lately between them. By the end of this week’s episode, we see that they have found some sort of middle ground that works well for both of them: they continue to work together and talk to each other, while giving each other the space they need and continuing to work towards the friendship they both want to return. Olympia has a very beautiful heart-to-heart with Matty during a really tough moment for the both of them and it adds a lot of context to how Olympia became the person we have seen on our screens since the beginning of the show.

No surprise here, I am going to give this episode another 5/5 star rating. I am so intrigued and excited to see where the story is going to continue to go. I am a little bitter that we are going to be waiting until Thursday, December 4th for our next episode with no promo at the end of the episode. Regardless and seriously, I am eagerly waiting the next episode and I can’t wait to see how everyone will continue to move on past the events of this week’s episode.
