Last week on Beyond The Gates, Vernon continues to sneak around, Kat faces issues with her family, Vanessa issues a warning, and Leslie wreaks havoc. Let's get into it.
Sibling Rivalry
Kat is hurt that Ted asked Eva to call him dad, and Eva, grasping on to her beef with Kat, goes to Kat’s home to confront her, call her names, and threaten her. Kat fights back with the same tired classist insults she always uses. I am so over this rivalry between sisters. Tomas, who is there, takes Eva’s side as per usual, and even Chelsea tells Kat that she accuses Eva of being like Leslie, but there she is acting just like her. To which Kat notes that Leslie gets what she wants, so maybe she should take a page out of her book.
Later, Kat and Ted have a heart-to-heart. She tells him what Eva did by sleeping with Tomas, and he brushes it off, informing her that Eva is here to stay. He loves them both. He tries to appeal to Kat’s compassionate side, but she doesn’t have one when it comes to Eva.
Kat sees Smitty at the cafe, and she tries to dodge him, but they talk. He is a better brother than Martin has been. Eva comes up, Kat is again asked to have compassion, but she can’t admit when she is wrong, one thing she and Martin have in common.
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Hayley and Randy’s schemes are soon to come to light. Joey has questions. In a bizarre twist, facial recognition was used on one of the cameras for reasons I do not understand. This revealed that Hayley was at the casino with Randy long before the fake miscarriage. Joey issues a warning. Bill is one of the most powerful men around. He also tells him that he doesn’t want to deal with the consequences of getting him mixed up in any drama involving Bill Hamilton.
Hayley and Bill have dinner with Jacob and Naomi. Hayley shows off pictures of the new vacation home. Naomi is viewing the pictures when Hayley gets a text about her birth control being ready. This is after Hayley talks about trying again. To my surprise, Hayley, having figured that Naomi saw the text, covers with Bill, saying that the pills balance her hormones so that she can eventually start trying for a baby again.
Dandre
You know what spells trouble in paradise? Everyone is talking up the couple. Vernon and Anita apologizing and accepting Andre so suddenly raises several red flags. A couple of women have been cast, so there are rumors that Yolanda is coming, and maybe Andre’s ex will also be showing up soon. This show loves male-centered triangles, insert heavy eye roll.
Dani senses that Andre doesn’t really want to do the shoot. They are all set to go, and she calls it off. She tells him to be real with her. He kept using the word risk. She presses him, and he tells her that he doesn’t want to ruin her comeback by not being good enough. That if he tanks the photos most of the blowback falls on her. I believe him, but I think there is a lot he is not saying.
Weekly Wrap
This week dragged a bit. I won’t get into the problems with the show, maybe next week. I have detailed these before. It is missing drama and if I am frank, they do not seem to want to write black characters in a way that can paint them in a bad light. The Duprees are supposed to be the core family, but they have neutered them. Bill and Joey seem to hold all of the power, with Leslie even having one up on them all the time. It is a very odd choice in the writing, and it is honestly turning me off.
Derek’s firefighter friends, Liam and Sheryl, should be recurring. How is it that he has more chemistry with Sheryl than with the woman he is supposed to be in love with? I hope we can keep her over Ashley. I will say that having them make out in Ashley’s house was an odd choice. Sheryl moved to quick, another problem with this show. They either rush or drag their feet with stories.
Thumbs Down
I won’t do my usual thumbs-up and thumbs-down. This thumbs down is focused on Leslie. What is happening here? She walks into Anita’s home once again unannounced and uninvited. This is after Ted, for reasons none of us can understand, tells her all about Winterfest and it being in Barbara’s honor. She snarks at Laura, her victim, then shouts ‘boo’ at her, scaring her. Winterfest will be all about Leslie as Anita and Nicole decide the best way to contain her is to include her. Read that again. In no way, shape, or form should she be going around scaring her victims like a cartoon villain. Laura was hidden for months, and no one could mention Leslie’s crimes. Now she is back to be her punching bag? If this doesn’t end in repercussions for Leslie, then I don’t know what.
I am trying really hard to support this show and stick beside it. Some days it is getting harder and harder to do so.
