Wow. This episode of Matlock was phenomenal and definitely one of my favorite so far in the series. I think all of the characters got their fair share of screentime & we are finally seeing things reach their breaking points.
One of my key highlights is the same as Episode 1, Matty & Olympia’s relationship. We see them in this episode playing games with each other, it’s very much a push and pull situation. I think this is truly where Skye and Kathy are going to shine this season. They’re always amazing at what they do, but seeing these characters going at each other like this, really shows us how far they’re willing to go to get what they want. Olympia wants to protect her kids from losing their father, which is understandable; and Matty wants wants to get justice for her daughter.
The writing here is so strong because it makes you want to root for each of them in this battle, but also you’re being pulled from one side to the other. Every single time we think Matty has the upper hand, Olympia finds a way to get ahead of her, and vice versa. Even though we don’t have an exact episode count for S2, it makes me wonder how much longer we can keep this momentum up before it all blows up in their faces. The anticipation from week-to-week is going to destroy me.
Another highlight for me this episode was seeing Sarah’s side storyline with Simone. Bringing it back to S1, Simone knows that Sarah took a client without Olympia’s approval or permission. She’s now holding that over Sarah’s head and essentially telling her she has different tasks to do or she’s going to go public with what she knows. Eventually, during this episode, Olympia finds out and she finds a way to transfer her to Omaha and I loved seeing her get her karma.
One of the weaker points in this episode for me was whatever this plotline for Billy is. I’m not sure if this episode was edited post-production because the scenes made sense, but if this is the storyline that was planned for him at the start of the season…I’m a little underwhelmed. But it proves my point that him leaving the show would have little to no major impact to the storylines at hand this season.
Overall, another very strong episode for Matlock & one that I think is one of my all-time favorites so far. Even with the Billy storyline being a mess, I would give this episode a strong 5/5 stars.
