MasterChef Season 16 Episode 12 Recap: Mystery Box Challenge Ends in Heartbreak

Last night’s episode of MasterChef: Global Gauntlet delivered the kind of high-stakes drama that keeps foodies glued to their screens, complete with a game-changing twist and a heartbreaking departure that changed everything for the remaining home cooks.
The judges kicked off the hour by completely obliterating the immunity pin rule. The safety blankie has been officially revoked, meaning no one can coast on past victories anymore.
Enter the "Global Feed" challenge. The cooks were tasked with crafting a culturally inspired dish that tasted incredible but looked even better, aiming for that elusive "the phone eats first" viral aesthetic. To help Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry separate the culinary geniuses from the basic influencers, social media chef and former MasterChef finalist Nick DiGiovanni swooped into the kitchen as a guest judge. The prize? A massive digital collaboration opportunity with Nick himself.
While Jake from Team Americas absolutely crushed it with a gorgeous horchata crème brûlée served inside a homemade churro bowl—securely locking in a win—the bottom of the pack was a tough watch.
Sadly, the beautiful journey came to an end for Maria Bourland. The food content creator, who has proudly represented Brazil and Team Americas, couldn't quite translate her usual internet magic to the judges' plates. Her dish missed the mark on both execution and flavor balance, leading to her elimination just shy of the coveted Top 10.
With the safety net gone and the competition tightening, the remaining 11 cooks are running out of room for error.
