Sony Pictures Television has officially announced the development of a scripted limited series centered on the investigative reporting that led to the downfall of Jeffrey Epstein. Academy Award winner Laura Dern is set to star as Julie K. Brown, the Miami Herald journalist whose tenacious reporting uncovered Epstein’s multi-decade sex trafficking ring and the controversial 2008 "sweetheart" plea deal that initially shielded him from federal prosecution.

The project is based on Brown’s 2021 non-fiction book, Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story. While various documentaries have explored the case, this marks the first major scripted dramatization focusing specifically on the journalistic process and the systemic failures that allowed Epstein to evade justice for years.

Production and Creative Team

The series boasts a high-profile creative team known for handling complex political and social narratives. Adam McKay (The Big Short, Succession) will executive produce via his Hyperobject Industries banner. Joining him as executive producers are Dern and Brown herself.

The writing and showrunning duties will be shared by Sharon Hoffman and Eileen Myers. Hoffman brings experience from The Morning Show and Mrs. America, both of which explored themes of systemic misconduct and power dynamics. Myers is best known for her work on The Night Agent and Masters of Sex.

Focus of the Series

Rather than focusing on the perpetrator, the narrative is expected to center on Brown’s years-long investigation. The script will detail her efforts to identify more than 80 survivors, many of whom were hesitant to speak due to previous legal intimidation, and her work in exposing the role of federal prosecutors in securing Epstein’s initial lenient sentence.

Sony Pictures Television is currently presenting the project to premium networks and streaming platforms. Given the sensitivity of the subject matter and the caliber of the talent involved, the series is expected to be one of the most anticipated prestige dramas in upcoming television cycles.
