Mother Knows Best: Kathryn Hahn Officially Cast as Mother Gothel in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’

Disney has finally decided to stop playing with our emotions and give the people what they actually want. While the House of Mouse has been busy churning out live-action remakes at a pace that suggests they’re afraid of original ideas, they’ve finally hit the jackpot with their latest casting coup. Kathryn Hahn is officially stepping into the velvet cloak of Mother Gothel for the upcoming live-action Tangled, and frankly, the rest of the production can go home now. We’ve found our star.

The Casting We Deserve

If there is any actress working today who can perfectly balance "loving maternal figure" with "psychologically damaging kidnapper," it’s Kathryn Hahn. Fresh off her reign of terror (and catchy theme songs) in the MCU, Hahn is bringing her signature brand of chaotic, high-energy villainy to the tower.

Confirmed on March 10, 2026, Hahn took to social media to claim the role, sporting Mother Gothel-inspired threads and updating her bio to include that iconic, gaslighting mantra: "Mother Knows Best." It’s the kind of meta-casting that feels like a warm hug if that hug was also designed to keep you locked in a stone building for eighteen years to preserve a magical hair-care routine.

Rapunzel and Flynn Get Their Flowers

While Hahn is undoubtedly the main event, Disney has rounded out the live-action Tangled cast with a pair of leads that might actually make us forget the 2010 original or at least stop comparing them to the voice actors for five minutes.

Teagan Croft, best known for her brooding turn in Titans, has snagged the role of Rapunzel. It’s a massive jump from gritty superheroes to a sun-drenched princess, but Croft has the wide-eyed wonder required to make talking to a chameleon seem grounded. Opposite her, Milo Manheim, the king of Disney Channel’s Zombies is playing the smoldering Flynn Rider. Manheim has the "Smolder" down to a science, though we’ll see if he can match the effortless charisma of Zachary Levi’s original performance.

Behind the Scenes: The Magic Makers

The project isn't just relying on star power. Disney is handing the keys to the kingdom to Michael Gracey, the director who turned The Greatest Showman into a global phenomenon. Given Gracey’s history with high-spectacle musicals, we can expect the "I See the Light" lantern scene to be a total tear-jerker.

The script is being handled by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the mind behind the razor-sharp Do Revenge. This is a promising sign; Robinson is an expert at writing complicated women, which means Hahn’s Mother Gothel might get even more depth (and perhaps a few more snarky one-liners) than the animated version.

Why This Matters for The TV Cave

Look, we’ve been critical of the "Disney Remake Machine" before. We’ve endured the uncanny valley lions and the underwater CGI nightmares. But Tangled feels different. With production set to kick off in summer 2026, the combination of Hahn’s comedic timing and Gracey’s visual flair suggests that Disney might actually be trying to improve on perfection rather than just tracing it.

Between Hahn’s casting and the inclusion of fresh talent like Croft and Manheim, the live-action Tangled movie is shaping up to be the most anticipated Disney project in years. We’re ready for the drama, the hair, and the inevitable TikTok edits of Kathryn Hahn being an absolute icon.

What do you think of the casting? Is Hahn the perfect choice for Gothel, or were you holding out hope for someone else to brush that magical hair? Let us know in the comments!
