Isiah Whitlock Jr., the acclaimed actor whose performance as State Senator Clay Davis on HBO’s landmark drama The Wire made him one of television’s most recognizable character actors, has died at the age of 71. His death was confirmed on December 30, 2025, following a brief illness. He passed away in New York, according to his longtime representation.

Whitlock built a steady and respected career long before achieving mainstream recognition. His early work included minor roles in major studio films such as Goodfellas and appearances across network television, including the Law & Order franchise. Those performances established him as a reliable supporting actor and set the stage for his defining role when The Wire premiered in 2002.

As Clay Davis, Whitlock portrayed a politically savvy and ethically compromised lawmaker whose presence loomed large across all five seasons of the series. The character became one of the show’s most memorable figures, with Whitlock’s distinctive line delivery becoming closely associated with the series and its cultural impact. His performance contributed significantly to the show’s reputation for complex and authentic portrayals of power and corruption.

Following The Wire, Whitlock remained a consistent presence on television. He later appeared on HBO’s political satire Veep as Secretary of Defense George Maddox and took on the role of Earn’s father, Raleigh, in FX’s critically praised series Atlanta. In 2020, he returned to the political arena on screen as Charlie Figaro in Showtime’s courtroom drama Your Honor, acting opposite Bryan Cranston.

In addition to his television work, Whitlock frequently collaborated with filmmaker Spike Lee, appearing in multiple films over nearly two decades. His roles ranged from supporting characters in socially driven dramas to ensemble performances in later projects, including the war drama Da 5 Bloods. Earlier this year, he appeared in the Netflix mystery series The Residence, portraying police chief Larry Dokes.

Known for his professionalism and range, Whitlock continued working steadily throughout his career, earning respect across the industry for his ability to elevate every role he played. His passing marks the loss of a performer whose contributions helped shape some of the most influential television and film projects of the modern era.

Isiah Whitlock Jr. leaves behind a legacy defined by strong character work, memorable performances, and a lasting influence on prestige television.
