If you were hoping for a radical shake-up of the broadcast landscape, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to CBS. The network that essentially invented the “if it ain’t broke, don’t touch it” philosophy just dumped a massive bucket of renewals on our desks, confirming that 10 of your favorite (or most tolerated) series are coming back for the 2026–2027 season.
It’s a good day to be a procedural fan and an even better day to be a CBS executive who enjoys consistent, if predictable, ratings. Let’s break down who survived the January culling and why the "Eye" is doubling down on what they know best.
The Heavy Hitters and the Legacy Acts
To the surprise of absolutely no one, NCIS has been renewed for Season 24. At this point, the show will likely outlive us all, eventually being filmed by drones in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Joining the mothership are its younger, slightly trendier siblings: NCIS: Origins (Season 3) and NCIS: Sydney (Season 4). Clearly, the world still has a massive appetite for military investigators in various climates.
Over in the drama department, Justin Hartley’s Tracker is speeding into Season 4. Since its post-Super Bowl debut a few years back, it’s become the network’s golden child. Fire Country also secured Season 5, meaning we get another year of Max Thieriot looking intense while things burn in the background.
The Freshman and Sophomore Surprises
The real news today is how well the newer class is performing. Matlock, starring the incomparable Kathy Bates, secured Season 3. It turns out that reimagining a classic with a sharp, snarky twist actually works when you have an Oscar winner at the helm. Similarly, Elsbeth is officially returning for Season 4, proving that we can’t get enough of Carrie Preston’s delightfully eccentric detective.
On the comedy front, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage continues the Big Bang Theory universe's dominance, securing Season 3. It seems the Cooper family tree is the gift that keeps on giving for CBS stockholders.
Unscripted Staples
Reality TV addicts can breathe easy. Survivor (Season 51) and The Amazing Race (Season 39) are both returning. Jeff Probst will continue to haunt our dreams with talk of "digging deep," and we will continue to watch people have meltdowns over GPS directions in foreign countries.
The TV Cave’s Take
While we’re happy our DVRs will stay full, this "renewal spree" is peak CBS. They’ve built a fortress out of procedurals and spin-offs. With Matthew Gray Gubler-led Einstein already waiting in the wings for next year, the network is essentially a well-oiled machine that runs on crime scenes and family dinners.
We have to point out that still left waiting for news is Watson and DMV. Sorry to their fans.
It’s safe, it’s reliable and it’s exactly what the audience wants. But we wouldn't mind a little more risk-taking every now and then. Maybe a procedural where the crime is actually solved by someone who isn't a brooding man with a secret? Just a thought.
Which renewal are you most excited about? Or better yet, which show are you shocked didn't get the axe? Sound off in the comments below and keep it locked to The TV Cave for more snarky updates and reviews.
