The House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere Just Went Full Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke is Logged Off

Whew. Take a deep breath, House of the Dragon fans, because the Season 3 premiere just dropped a bomb that no one, not even George R.R. Martin’s book loyalists saw coming. The Dance of the Dragons is back, but the real explosion didn't happen on a battlefield. It happened in a dimly lit room between Alicent Hightower and her son, Aemond Targaryen. That shocking mother-son kiss has officially broken the internet and not us feeling a certain way while watching it through our fingers.

If you are currently scrubbing your eyes with soap, you aren't alone. Stars Olivia Cooke and Ewan Mitchell have finally broken their silence on that moment, and their reactions are just as wild as you’d expect.

Ewan Mitchell is Logged Out (and a Little Nauseous)

Let’s start with the instigator of this family reunion from hell. Ewan Mitchell, who plays Westeros's resident anime villain Aemond Targaryen, didn't mince words when discussing the scene. Mitchell hilariously admitted that watching or thinking about the sequence "kind of makes you want to throw up in your mouth a little bit."

But behind the visceral disgust, Mitchell explained that the twist makes perfect, albeit twisted, psychological sense for his character. Aemond has spent his entire life starved for the fierce maternal protection Alicent only gave him when he lost his eye. According to Mitchell, Aemond has a very "strange way" of seeking unconditional love. By crossing this ultimate line, Aemond isn't just looking for affection; he’s staging a hostile takeover of the household. In Mitchell's words, the move is Aemond's way of declaring, "I'm the daddy now."

Olivia Cooke is Straight Up Stupefied

On the other side of that deeply unsettling interaction is Olivia Cooke, who brings a much-needed dose of reality to the situation. Cooke confessed that filming the scene was "quite odd for both of us," noting a latent, disturbing Oedipal undercurrent that Alicent had been entirely blind to until Aemond leaned in.

If you thought Alicent looked paralyzed during the premiere, that was entirely intentional. Cooke emphasized that her character’s reaction is rooted in pure survival and terror, not romantic compliance. Aemond is currently the most volatile, dangerous man in the Seven Kingdoms, and Alicent knows it. Any explicit rejection could quite literally result in her death, leaving her completely frozen. Cooke noted that playing this sudden shift was "devastating" for a parent, requiring her to rely completely on her imagination since there is absolutely nothing comparable to draw from in real life.

The Verdict on Westeros's Newest Nightmare

The House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere was wild and it doesn't just need fire-breathing beasts to leave its audience entirely speechless. By leaning into the most uncomfortable dynamics of the Targaryen family tree, the series has set a dark, unpredictable tone for the rest of the season. Olivia Cooke and Ewan Mitchell delivered a deeply memorable sequence, even if it leaves us all wanting to jump into a bath of holy water.
