House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere Ending Explained: Jace’s Fate and Rhaenyra’s Nightmare

A Firelit Bond
Rhaena attempts to claim the wild dragon Sheepstealer as her own. Though she is finally able to ride him, the beast quickly spins out of control. Later, Sheepstealer throws Rhaena off, and in a moment of frustration, she tells him to go back home to Dragonstone. However, the connection isn't broken: Sheepstealer returns, bringing sheep to Rhaena and burning them so they can eat together—a definitive sign that she is now officially his rider.
Captured and Exposed
Meanwhile, Aegon and Larys are fleeing the Red Keep in a wagon when they are apprehended by Rhaenyra's men. Ordered to bend the knee, Aegon refuses. It is during this defiance that his true identity is revealed to the guards. Thinking quickly, Larys commands the men to take them to Rhaenyra alive. Back at the castle, Aemond notices his brother is missing and confronts Alicent about Aegon's disappearance with Larys. He questions her recent whereabouts, but she lies, claiming she was in the Kingswood.
A Broken Promise
Rhaenyra desperately wants to believe Alicent and stick to the secret peace plan they made, but Jacaerys (Jace) pleads with his mother not to trust her. Alicent soon realizes the shifting tides will make it entirely impossible to pull off her plan and deliver Aemond to Rhaenyra. In an desperate attempt to buy time, Alicent sends a note to Aemond's knights, telling them to hold for three days. The knights obey, believing the order came directly from Aemond, who is now acting as King.
A Mother’s Manipulation
In a tense confrontation, Alicent pleads with Aemond not to stay at the castle and wait for Rhaenyra to send her dragons to kill him. She begs him to go with her instead, playing heavily on her influence and his emotions as his mother. However, the dynamic twists when Aemond kisses her and tells her he will hold a feast in her honor. Alicent pretends she is okay with it, but she is left visibly shaken and upset. Elsewhere, Ser Gwayne witnesses a soldier violating a village girl and firmly tells Ser Criston that they must make a statement to their men: they are knights, not beasts.
The Sea Snake’s Legacy
At the docks, Corlys (the Sea Snake) summons Alyn and reveals Rhaenyra's plan to take King's Landing. In a rare vulnerable moment, Corlys mentions how fond he was of Alyn's mother and notes that he always tried to provide for him and his brother, Addam. Alyn sharply counters, pointing out that while Corlys may have provided, he never gave them a name. Shortly after, the Triarchy fleet begins to surround the Sea Snake's boats.
The Battle of the Gullet Begins
The war arrives swiftly. Rhaenyra is alerted by Baela that a massive conflict is rising in the Gullet. Rhaenyra insists that she will go there and fight alongside Jace, but Jace takes control, ordering her knights to lock her in her room. He tells Baela that they will go fight the battle together. Rhaenyra is locked in her room—a queen who wants to be a fighter, but is left utterly distraught that no one seems to believe in her, not even her own son.
On the water, Lohar fights the Sea Snake's boats viciously. She makes it clear she isn't there for the King—she wants personal revenge against Corlys, explicitly vowing to burn his castle, High Tide.
Draconic Chaos
Baela and Jace arrive at the sea battle on their dragons, Moondancer and Vermax, and begin burning Lohar's ships. In retaliation, Lohar fires an arrow that hits Vermax. The dragon struggles but manages to recover with Baela's help. Suddenly, Rhaena arrives at the battle on Sheepstealer, but she cannot control the wild beast. In a horrific turn of events, Sheepstealer begins burning Corlys's ships instead of the enemy, and then aggressively goes after Baela and Moondancer.
The Odds Defied
Amidst the dragon fire, Corlys navigates his flagship through an incredibly narrow passage, hoping Lohar will follow and get stuck. Defying the odds, Lohar successfully makes it through. Corlys is left distraught as he looks back and sees High Tide burning in the distance. Lohar scores a direct hit on the Sea Snake's boat and attempts to board it with her men. During the chaos, Corlys falls into the water, forcing Alyn to engage in a brutal fight with Lohar, ultimately killing her.
Doom and Distrust
Hoping to save his sister, Jace attempts to help on Vermax, but a volley of arrows strikes them from a boat, and they go down. Jace survives the initial fall into the sea, but he is targeted by arrows in the water and dies. All around the Gullet, there is only death and doom. No clear winner in this battle. Just destruction.
A Parallel of Mothers and Sons
Ultimately, this premiere highlights two powerful women who are deeply at odds with their sons as they struggle to find their footing. We see Alicent using her specific style of manipulation to control Aemond, while Rhaenyra desperately fights just to get her own son to respect her wishes and her authority as Queen.
