High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam Trailer Reveals TNT's Intense New Political Thriller

If your television watchlist has been begging for another gripping political thriller, TNT may have just answered the call.

The network has officially unveiled the first trailer for High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam, its upcoming limited series starring Joel Kinnaman, and let's just say this isn't your typical history lesson. Instead of focusing on the battlefield, the eight episode drama zooms in on one of the most fascinating and high pressure moments following the capture of Saddam Hussein. This is the kind of premise that immediately grabs your attention.

Along with the first look, TNT also confirmed that the series will premiere this September as a special two night television event. Kinnaman stars as CIA analyst John Nixon, the first American intelligence officer to interrogate Saddam Hussein after his capture in December 2003. If that name sounds familiar, there's a reason. Nixon later detailed his experience in the memoir Debriefing the President, which serves as the inspiration for the series.

Rather than telling a sweeping war story, High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam narrows its focus to the tense conversations that unfolded between Nixon and Saddam Hussein, played by Waleed Zuaiter. As Nixon searches for answers about Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, the series also explores the enormous political decisions and lasting consequences that followed the United States invasion of Iraq.

It's a different angle than viewers might expect, and that's what makes the project stand out. Not every historical drama needs explosions around every corner. Sometimes the biggest moments happen with two people sitting across a table from one another.

Behind the camera, the series brings together a creative team with plenty of experience tackling complex stories. Emmy Award nominee Leslie Greif serves as co writer and director, while the project is produced by AR Content and Big Dreams Entertainment.

The cast surrounding Kinnaman is equally impressive. Waleed Zuaiter takes on the role of Saddam Hussein, joined by Lena Góra, Rebecca Night, Tom Berenger, Christopher McDonald, Dar Salim, Matt Barr, Ewan Miller, Paul Ryan, and Talia Balsam.

That is a lineup packed with familiar faces.

TNT isn't making viewers wait week after week to get started. The network is kicking things off with a two night premiere event. The first two episodes debut on Sunday, September 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by episode three on Monday, September 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes will continue airing on Sunday and Monday nights before the finale arrives on Sunday, October 4.

For anyone who enjoys limited series that blend history, politics, and suspense, the release schedule makes this one easy to jump into right from the beginning. Television has never shied away from revisiting major historical events, but what immediately caught our attention about High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam is its perspective. Instead of trying to tell every part of the Iraq War, the series appears focused on one extraordinary relationship and the questions that shaped a generation.

Joel Kinnaman has built a career playing characters who can carry enormous pressure without saying much, whether it was For All Mankind, The Killing, or Altered Carbon. On paper, John Nixon feels like another role that plays directly into those strengths. Will the series spark plenty of conversation when it premieres? We'd bet on it.
