Richard Madden to Star in Trauma as Paramount+ Orders New Medical Thriller

Richard Madden has found his next television project, and let's just say this is not your average medical drama.

Paramount+ has officially announced Trauma, a new scripted series that drops the Bodyguard star into a London hospital under siege after terrorists storm the building and take the British Prime Minister hostage in the middle of surgery. If that setup made you stop scrolling for a second, same.

Madden will play Jim Marchant, a former Royal Marines medic who now works as an emergency room doctor. His day quickly turns into a fight for survival when armed attackers seize control of the hospital, leaving him as one of the few people capable of protecting the patients, staff, and the country's most important political leader. The series follows Marchant as he battles through the hospital one floor at a time, with every move changing the balance of power inside the building.

It's a premise that blends the pressure of a medical drama with the intensity of an action thriller; that's a combination we don't see nearly enough on television. The series comes from writer Geoff Bussetil, whose previous credits include Slow Horses, Scoop, and Skins. Daniel Syrkin, known for directing Tehran and MobLand, is attached to direct, while Richard Madden will also serve as an executive producer.

Behind the scenes, Trauma is being produced by Lionsgate Television and 42 Management & Production, with Prime Video and Paramount+ joining forces as co producers. Paramount+ will stream the series across its available territories outside the United Kingdom and Ireland.

For Madden, the role feels like another natural fit. Whether audiences know him from Game of Thrones, his Golden Globe winning performance in Bodyguard, Marvel's Eternals, or Citadel, he's built a career around characters forced to keep their cool under impossible circumstances. Jim Marchant may end up being his toughest assignment yet.

Paramount+ also continues to build an increasingly impressive slate of original scripted programming. Trauma joins recently announced projects including Ascent starring Viola Davis, the Clueless sequel event series with Alicia Silverstone returning, Laird starring Kenneth Branagh, Fear Not with Anne Hathaway, 9/12 starring Jeremy Strong, and Discretion starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning.

Production on Trauma is expected to begin in October 2026, and while Paramount+ hasn't announced a premiere date just yet, this is already one to keep an eye on. Medical dramas have been television staples for decades, but throwing a full scale hostage crisis into the middle of an emergency room gives this one an identity all its own.
