The procedural world is rarely kind to the people in charge, but Captain Nick Wagner really went through the ringer this year. After a season defined by a polarizing facial hair choice and a mounting pile of unsolved mysteries, Steve Howey is officially leaving High Potential as a series regular. While the Season 2 finale left his character’s life hanging by a thread, the off-screen reality is much more definitive: the Captain has sailed his last mission, at least on a full-time basis.
A One-Year Tour of Duty
Fans wondering if there was behind-the-scenes drama can put the pitchforks away. Howey’s exit from the Kaitlin Olson-led hit wasn't a sudden firing or a creative fallout. The Shameless alum originally signed a one-year contract for Season 2, meaning the writers knew his shelf life from day one.
His departure coincides with a massive career pivot. Howey essentially colonizing every streaming service at once. With major roles lined up in Prime Video’s Off Campus, Netflix’s Ransom Canyon, and a recurring gig on The Lincoln Lawyer, his schedule simply didn’t have room for the daily grind of a broadcast procedural.
Stache-gate and the Wagner Legacy
It’s impossible to talk about Nick Wagner without mentioning the mustache. Dubbed "Stachegate" by the internet, Howey’s Season 2 look became more of a talking point than his actual police work. While the "flavor saver" was eventually shaved mid-season due to fan outcry, it served as a metaphor for his character’s run: slightly out of place, a bit distracting, but undeniably memorable.
In the final moments of Season 2, Wagner was left bleeding out after a meeting with an FBI source. It was a classic "is he or isn't he" cliffhanger designed to keep us theorizing through the hiatus. While he won't be back as a regular, there is heavy talk of a guest appearance in the Season 3 premiere to provide closure or a funeral.
What Lies Ahead for Season 3
With showrunner Todd Harthan also exiting, High Potential is heading into a massive transition. The show has already been renewed for Season 3, but the LAPD precinct is going to feel a lot emptier without Wagner’s begrudging respect for Morgan’s genius.
Whether the new showrunner decides to let Wagner survive in an off-screen retirement or uses his death to fuel a Season 3
revenge arc remains to be seen. Either way, Howey is moving on to greener (and perhaps more bearded) pastures.
