Episode 13 of Season 2 of High Potential, titled “In the Driver’s Seat,” kicks off the show’s return from hiatus with a strange and chaotic crime scene involving a Smart Car heist that goes completely wrong. When Morgan Gillory arrives, Adam Karadec is already there, but things quickly get more complicated when it turns out a bullet and a dead body are part of the scene.
Morgan immediately starts doing what she does best, piecing together the timeline. One of the funnier creative choices in this episode is that her thought process is illustrated with puppets acting out the events, which was honestly pretty entertaining and gave the investigation a unique visual twist. The victim is initially labeled as a John Doe, and the team begins trying to figure out what really happened because the heist clearly isn’t the full story.
As the investigation unfolds, the team splits up. Morgan works with Oz while Karadec teams up with Daphne Forrester and Lt. Soto, to interrogate one of the suspects. A funny moment happens when Karadec roasts a thief for a terrible skin rash, which turns out to be airbag dermatitis. One thing I did notice is that Morgan isn’t in quite as many scenes as usual, which made me wonder if Kaitlin Olson was busy filming something else during production but turns out it was just an odd direction choice that I didn't really care for.
Outside the case, we finally get more screen time with Morgan’s daughter Ava, which was a nice surprise. Their conversation about Ava wanting to attend a design prep school adds some emotional depth to the episode.
Eventually the victim is identified as Joaquin Herrera, and the investigation spirals into a complicated web of suspects, blackmail, and framing attempts. In the end, Morgan cracks the case again, revealing that dealership owner Glenn Gannick orchestrated the entire setup himself as part of a blackmail scheme. It’s another clever mystery that keeps the twists coming until the very end.
I cannot end this review without adding that Arthur returns and is arrested for handling Morgan's little stalker issue. I cannot wait to see how this part of the story continues to unfold.
