Abbott delivered another chaotic day at the school this week, with Jacob’s brother dropping in, Janine barely holding her classroom together, and a surprisingly thoughtful storyline about ADHD that gave the episode a little more heart than laughs.
Brotherly Chaos
Jacob’s brother Caleb comes to visit, and right away, the dynamic is hilarious. Melissa immediately takes to Caleb, treating him far better than she usually treats Jacob. It’s the kind of sibling energy that instantly puts Jacob on the defensive. The two start bickering when Caleb wants to have people over, and Jacob clearly feels like his brother is overshadowing him in his own space.
Janine vs. The Student Count
At school, Janine initially feels good because her class size has dropped to 37 students. For Janine, that feels like a victory. Of course, this is Abbott Elementary, so peace never lasts long. Ava strolls in and casually adds five more students to Janine’s classroom, throwing everything back into chaos.
Later in the teacher’s lounge, Janine finally admits she’s overwhelmed while sipping what can only be described as coffee-ground water. During the conversation, the teachers discuss a student being tested for ADHD. Some of the older teachers question medication, calling it a “band-aid” solution. What they don’t realize is that Dom has ADHD and takes medication by choice. The moment quietly reframes the conversation and becomes one of the more meaningful beats of the episode.
The PE Problem
Abbott also needs a PE teacher, which means the staff is temporarily sharing gym duties. As expected, the results are terrible. Watching the teachers struggle through PE is classic Abbott chaos. Jacob suggests Caleb as a potential PE teacher, but the suggestion isn’t well-received. Neither the staff nor Ava seems interested in giving Jacob’s brother a chance.
Meanwhile, Janine’s classroom continues to spiral out of control. She finally marches into Ava’s office and demands a teacher’s aide. Ava agrees to see what she can do.
The Return of Ashley
Ava’s solution is to bring back Ashley Garcia as Janine’s aide. Unfortunately for Janine, Ashley is not exactly helpful. Those who remember her previous appearance know that she’s more like another student than an actual assistant.
Janine immediately tries to give her back, but Ava refuses. Janine is stuck with her, and it quickly becomes clear Ashley will add to the chaos rather than fix it.
Jacob’s Misunderstanding
Dom approaches Jacob to talk about the teachers’ lounge conversation. Dom was offended by the ADHD comments, but Jacob completely misunderstood the situation. Assuming Dom is referring to something related to being queer, Jacob promises to speak to Barbara about it. The problem is that Jacob has no idea what Dom is actually upset about. When Jacob attempts to address it with Barbara, he fumbles the conversation in peak Jacob fashion.
Eventually, Dom clarifies that he’s not talking about sexuality at all, he’s talking about ADHD. At that point, Dom decides to handle the situation himself.
A Real Conversation
Dom speaks directly with Barbara and explains why the earlier comments bothered him. Barbara listens and acknowledges his perspective. She agrees to be more mindful about how she talks about ADHD and offers a sincere apology.
It’s a small but meaningful moment that fits well with Abbott’s ability to mix humor with real-world issues.
Caleb Saves the Day
In the end, Jacob finally gets a win. He brings Caleb in to help with PE, and Caleb immediately proves he’s the right person for the job. The class responds well to him, and he knocks it out the park, validating Jacob’s suggestion.
Final Thoughts
This episode wasn’t quite as laugh-out-loud funny as some of the recent ones, but it still delivered that classic Abbott blend of chaos, awkwardness, and heart. The ADHD storyline added some depth, and the Jacob-Caleb dynamic provided plenty of character-driven humor.
Not the funniest episode of the season, but still a solid outing that felt genuinely Abbott.
