It’s time to head back to the registrar’s office, because HBO just gave the green light for more academic misery. Rooster has officially been renewed for Season 2, ensuring that Steve Carell’s Greg Russo will continue to flounder through his mid-life crisis on the Ludlow College campus for at least one more semester. The news comes midway through a freshman run that has managed to do the impossible: make people actually want to watch a show about the inner workings of a liberal arts college without a single dragon or prestige murder in sight.
The Ratings Don't Lie (Even If the Students Do)
The renewal isn’t exactly a shocker for anyone tracking the numbers. Averaging 5.8 million viewers per episode since its March debut, Rooster is currently pacing to be HBO’s most-watched first-year comedy in over a decade. It turns out that watching a disgraced author try to rebuild his life while his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), tries to pretend she isn't related to him is exactly the kind of cringe-comedy gold audiences were craving.
The production team also did their homework early. Long before this official announcement, the series secured a $21 million California tax credit specifically for a second season. HBO clearly knew they had a hit on their hands, and they weren't about to let this faculty meeting end early.
What’s on the Syllabus for Season 2?
While Season 1 has been soaking in the crisp, judgmental vibes of the fall semester, Season 2 is reportedly shifting gears to the spring semester. This means new elective courses, fresh campus drama, and presumably, even more opportunities for Greg to say the wrong thing at a department mixer.
Creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the minds behind Ted Lasso and Scrubs, have previously hinted at a three-season arc for the series. If Season 1 is the introduction and Season 2 is the inevitable sophomore slump (narratively speaking, of course), we can likely expect a graduation finale down the road.
Who’s Returning to Ludlow?
Expect the full ensemble to report back for duty. Alongside Carell and Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, and the perpetually exasperated John C. McGinley are all expected to return. The chemistry between this cast has been the show's secret weapon, turning what could have been a standard "dad trying too hard" trope into a genuinely sharp look at family dynamics and the absurdity of higher education.
With the Season 1 finale set for May 10, there are still a few more lessons to be learned. But for fans of Greg’s slow-motion train wreck of a career, the best news is that the tuition is already paid for next year.
