‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Casts Arthur Weasley, Moaning Myrtle and Colin Creevey

HBO’s Harry Potter series hasn’t even welcomed viewers to Hogwarts for its first season yet, but work on the next chapter is already moving forward. Three more familiar characters from the Wizarding World have officially found the actors who will bring them to television.

HBO announced Tuesday, September 15, that Rafe Spall, Molly Hewitt-Richards and Jasper Ambrose have joined the cast for Season 2. Spall will play Arthur Weasley, Hewitt-Richards has been cast as Moaning Myrtle, and Ambrose will take on the role of Colin Creevey. Season 2 is set to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Rafe Spall Is the New Arthur Weasley

Rafe Spall will step into the role of Arthur Weasley, the patriarch of the Weasley family and father of Ron, Ginny, Fred, George, Percy, Bill and Charlie. Mark Williams famously portrayed Arthur throughout the original Harry Potter film franchise.

There’s also an interesting Potter connection already in the Spall family. Rafe is the son of Timothy Spall, who played Peter Pettigrew — better known as Wormtail — in the original films. That makes the younger Spall one of the latest actors in HBO’s adaptation to have a direct connection to the previous generation of the franchise.

Spall joins a Weasley family that has been steadily taking shape. Katherine Parkinson plays Molly Weasley, Alastair Stout stars as Ron, Ruari Spooner is Percy, while Tristan and Gabriel Harland play Fred and George.

Moaning Myrtle and Colin Creevey Are Heading to Hogwarts

Molly Hewitt-Richards has been tapped to play Moaning Myrtle, the Hogwarts ghost who spends much of her afterlife haunting the second-floor girls’ bathroom. Shirley Henderson portrayed Myrtle in the original movies, beginning with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Jasper Ambrose will play Colin Creevey, the enthusiastic young Gryffindor who quickly becomes fascinated with Harry and rarely seems to be without his camera. Both characters become important additions to Harry’s world during his second year at Hogwarts, making their arrival another sign of how quickly HBO is building out the ensemble for its Chamber of Secrets adaptation.

‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Is Already Taking Shape

The three actors join several previously announced Season 2 additions. Kit Harington has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart, Lenny Rush will play Dobby, and Billy Barratt will portray Tom Riddle. HBO has also recast Ginny Weasley for the second season, with Bonnie Hill taking over the role from Season 1 actress Gracie Cochrane.

The growing Season 2 cast arrives before audiences have even seen the first season, which will introduce Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They’re joined by an ensemble that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The HBO series is being developed as a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga, with Francesca Gardiner serving as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod is an executive producer and directs multiple episodes, with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television producing alongside HBO. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman are also executive producers.

With Arthur Weasley, Moaning Myrtle and Colin Creevey now accounted for, HBO is filling in more of the characters who make Chamber of Secrets such a major expansion of Harry’s world. And with Season 2 casting already this far along, the television adaptation clearly isn’t waiting for its first trip to Hogwarts to begin preparing for the second.
