‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Season 2 Trailer Unleashes Biblical Plagues and Ryan Phillippe’s Rogue

ABC is turning up the danger in Music City as 9-1-1: Nashville heads into its sophomore season. The first Season 2 trailer has arrived, teasing a string of increasingly bizarre emergencies, a new detective played by Ryan Phillippe and what appears to be a criminal with a taste for Biblical plagues.

Season 2 premieres Thursday, October 15 at 9/8c on ABC, immediately following the Season 10 premiere of 9-1-1. Judging by the footage, Station 113 will have plenty to deal with when the series returns, both on the job and within the Hart family.

Ryan Phillippe Enters the ‘9-1-1’ Universe

One of the biggest additions this season is Phillippe as Rogue, a hard-boiled homicide detective who comes to Nashville from New York City. The trailer introduces him as the city finds itself dealing with increasingly disturbing incidents tied to a mysterious criminal, including swarms of insects that bring an entirely different kind of emergency to Music City.

Yes, 9-1-1: Nashville is apparently going Biblical in Season 2. Showrunner Rashad Raisani previously teased a storyline involving a criminal wreaking havoc around Nashville with crimes inspired by Biblical plagues, and the trailer offers the first real taste of what that means. Murder hornets are among the threats shown, joining the massive and sometimes downright strange emergencies viewers have come to expect from the 9-1-1 franchise.

Phillippe joins returning cast members Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, LeAnn Rimes, Hailey Kilgore, Hunter McVey, Juani Feliz and Michael Provost. His arrival gives the series another major character to work into an already complicated web of first responders, family members and relationships.

What Happens After Blythe and Dixie’s Fight?

Season 1 left behind plenty of unfinished business before anyone had to worry about Biblical plagues. The finale ended with Blythe Hart and Dixie Bennings literally at each other’s throats after Dixie revealed that Don had apparently agreed to spend the night with her, with their confrontation cutting to black before viewers learned exactly how things ended.

Season 2 picks up three weeks later, but the series isn’t expected to immediately reveal everything that happened during the fight. Raisani has confirmed that both women survived, although their confrontation will have consequences for each of them. Don’s actions will also continue hanging over his marriage to Blythe, meaning one of the show’s central family relationships could look considerably different when we return to Nashville.

Ryan and Sam are facing their own frightening situation after learning about Sam’s pregnancy while she is also dealing with a life-threatening tumor. Taylor’s music career continues to grow, while her relationship with Blue could face new pressure as they begin figuring out what their individual futures look like. There was already plenty of personal drama waiting for these characters before Season 2 decided to throw murder hornets into the mix.

Bigger Emergencies and More ‘9-1-1’ Connections

The sophomore season is also expected to strengthen the connection between 9-1-1: Nashville and the original 9-1-1. A smaller crossover moment is planned early in the season, while a larger crossover is being developed for later episodes. Raisani has also indicated that characters from the former 9-1-1: Lone Star could potentially become involved, opening the door for the franchise’s different corners to overlap even more.

For now, Nashville has more than enough problems of its own. Between the Biblical-plague-inspired crimes, Rogue’s arrival, massive new emergencies and all of the unresolved Hart family drama, the Season 2 trailer suggests Station 113 isn’t getting an easy sophomore year when 9-1-1: Nashville returns Thursday, October 15 at 9/8c on ABC.
