Well, Hulu just pulled the rug out from under anyone who thought Good American Family was actually going to stay a limited series. The streamer has renewed the Ellen Pompeo-led drama for Season 2, but there is a pretty major catch: the series is becoming an anthology, meaning the Natalia Grace story is officially over and the next season will tackle an entirely different headline-making case.
And Hulu did not exactly pick a quiet story for its next chapter. Season 2 of Good American Family will focus on Lorena and John Bobbitt, whose infamous 1993 case became one of the biggest media spectacles of the decade. The new season will explore not only what happened between the Virginia couple, but also the way the media turned a deeply serious situation involving allegations of abuse and sexual assault into entertainment, jokes and a national debate about gender.
Good American Family Is Officially Becoming an Anthology
Season 1 of Good American Family premiered on Hulu in March 2025 and dramatized the controversial real-life story surrounding Natalia Grace, her adoption by Kristine and Michael Barnett and the conflicting accounts surrounding their family. Ellen Pompeo starred as Kristine, with Mark Duplass playing Michael and Imogen Faith Reid portraying Natalia. The series used shifting perspectives to present different versions of the story, making viewers question what they thought they knew as the episodes unfolded.
Rather than continuing that storyline, Hulu is taking the show in a completely new direction. The anthology format allows Good American Family to explore another infamous true story each season, with Season 2 turning its attention to the Bobbitt case and the enormous media circus that surrounded it. The move gives the series a much bigger playground, because apparently there are more real-life stories out there that make us say, "Wait, that actually happened?"
Season 2 Will Explore the Lorena Bobbitt Case
The second season will revisit the 1993 case involving Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple whose troubled marriage became an international sensation. Lorena was accused of severing her husband's penis while he slept, and she later alleged that John had sexually and physically abused her during their marriage. John was acquitted of marital sexual assault, while Lorena was found not guilty by reason of insanity and subsequently received psychiatric treatment.
What made the case such a cultural phenomenon was not simply the shocking incident itself, but what happened afterward. The story became a media feeding frenzy filled with sensational coverage, jokes and intense conversations about domestic abuse, sexual violence, gender and how the public consumes trauma. Hulu's Season 2 logline specifically points toward that media spectacle, promising to examine how the Bobbitts' personal tragedy became entertainment for an enormous audience.
That approach also creates a pretty natural connection between the two seasons. While the Natalia Grace and Bobbitt cases are obviously very different, both became subjects of intense public fascination, competing narratives and years of media coverage. Good American Family appears to be positioning itself as a series about the complicated space where real-life trauma meets the public's seemingly endless appetite for a shocking story.
Ellen Pompeo Is Returning Behind the Scenes
Although fans should not expect to see Ellen Pompeo return to Hulu in another starring role for Season 2, she will remain involved as an executive producer. Creator, writer and executive producer Katie Robbins is also returning, meaning the series will retain the creative leadership that shaped its first season.
Lorena Bobbitt is also expected to serve as a consultant on the new season, giving the project a direct connection to the woman whose life became the center of one of the most sensationalized criminal cases of the 1990s. A Season 2 cast has not yet been announced, so there is still plenty we don't know about who will portray Lorena, John and the people surrounding their story.
This Isn't the First Time Hollywood Has Told the Bobbitt Story
If the case sounds familiar, there is a reason. The Bobbitt story has already been explored in multiple projects, including Amazon's 2019 documentary series Lorena, which was executive produced by Jordan Peele and featured interviews with both Lorena and John. Lifetime also dramatized the story in the 2020 television movie I Was Lorena Bobbitt, starring Dani Montalvo and Luke Humphrey.
That means Good American Family has a challenge ahead of it. Audiences already know the headline, the sensational details and the basic outcome, so the series will need to offer something beyond simply recreating the events that dominated television news more than 30 years ago. Its focus on the media's treatment of Lorena and the broader cultural conversation surrounding the case could give this version a different angle.
When Will Good American Family Season 2 Premiere?
Unfortunately, Hulu has not announced a premiere date for Season 2 yet, and the cast has not been revealed. What we do know is that the new season is moving forward with Robbins and Pompeo involved creatively, and the Bobbitt case will serve as the foundation for the next installment.
For a series that originally arrived as a limited drama about one real-life family, turning Good American Family into an anthology is a pretty major evolution. Instead of asking whether there is more story to tell about Natalia Grace, Hulu is essentially asking what other infamous cases can be examined through the same lens of competing narratives, media obsession and public perception.
And with the Lorena Bobbitt case as the first new story, Hulu is certainly not easing us into the anthology concept. Season 2 is taking one of the most infamous true-crime stories in American pop culture and looking beyond the shocking headline to examine the people, the trauma and the media spectacle surrounding it.
One thing is already clear: Good American Family may have started as a limited series, but Hulu clearly wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet.
