Well, Gleeks, it looks like we're heading back to McKinley High. Whether the world is emotionally prepared for another round of show choir competitions, questionable musical choices, and enough teenage drama to make a soap opera jealous is another conversation entirely.

Glee is officially making a comeback! According to Deadline, Disney+ and Hulu have handed the reboot a series order, bringing Ryan Murphy's beloved musical dramedy one major step closer to returning to our screens. More than a decade after the original series ended, the New Directions universe is getting another chance to hit those high notes.

UPDATE — October 21, 2026, 5:00 PM ET: The Glee reunion is already getting more interesting! Lea Michele is reportedly returning as Rachel Berry, while Heather Morris has taken to social media to tease her return as Brittany Pierce. Chord Overstreet has also sparked speculation about reprising his role as Sam Evans, although his involvement has not been confirmed. Disney and Hulu have yet to announce an official returning cast list, but it looks like New Directions might be getting some familiar faces back in the choir room!

Ryan Murphy Is Bringing Glee Back

The news shouldn't come as a complete surprise to anyone who's been following Murphy's recent comments. Back in September, the television powerhouse revealed that he had completed a script for the potential reboot alongside fellow original creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.

At the time, Murphy also shared that he'd been speaking with approximately 10 members of the original cast about the possibility of returning. According to his comments, those conversations were encouraging, although enthusiasm and a signed contract are two very different things in Hollywood.

Now, with Disney+ and Hulu officially moving forward, those discussions suddenly carry a little more weight. The project is no longer just another nostalgic television idea floating around Hollywood, although we'll still have to see exactly what Murphy and company have planned.

Will the Original Glee Cast Return?

Now, this is where things get interesting. While Murphy has previously discussed conversations with former cast members, no original stars have been officially confirmed for the reboot.

The original series featured Lea Michele as Rachel Berry, Chris Colfer as Kurt Hummel, Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones, Darren Criss as Blaine Anderson, and Jane Lynch as the gloriously unhinged Sue Sylvester. Matthew Morrison, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Dianna Agron were also among the many performers who helped turn the series into a pop culture phenomenon.

Of course, any return would also have to acknowledge the show's complicated history and the loss of beloved cast members Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera. Their characters, Finn Hudson and Santana Lopez, were an enormous part of what made the original series special, and that legacy deserves care rather than a quick nostalgia grab.

Whether the reboot introduces a completely new generation of performers, reunites familiar faces, or attempts some combination of both remains to be seen.

Can Glee Capture the Magic Again?

When Glee premiered on Fox in 2009, it wasn't just another high school television series. It turned show choir into appointment television, introduced a generation of fans to musical theater, and delivered performances that people were downloading before the episode credits even finished rolling.

The series ran for six seasons before wrapping up in 2015, earning six Primetime Emmy Awards along the way. But for all its success, Glee was also famous for storylines that occasionally went completely off the rails, character decisions that made absolutely no sense, and musical numbers that ranged from spectacular to wonderfully ridiculous.

And that's part of what makes this reboot such an interesting gamble. Television has changed considerably since the original New Directions first walked into the choir room, and simply repeating the same formula with a different group of teenagers might not be enough.

Still, if there's one thing Ryan Murphy has demonstrated over the years, it's that he knows how to get people talking. Whether this new version inspires standing ovations or a whole new generation of Gleeks arguing on social media, the return of Glee is already shaping up to be quite the television event.

No premiere date or official cast lineup has been announced. For now, though, one thing is certain: Glee is officially getting another shot at the spotlight, and we have a feeling the drama is just getting started.
