‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Finale Leaves River Cartwright’s Fate Hanging in the Balance

Just when you think the agents of Slough House have survived enough disasters to earn themselves a peaceful afternoon, Slow Horses finds another way to make their lives miserable. And this time, the Season 6 finale leaves one of its most important characters in a situation that has us seriously concerned.
The sixth season concludes Wednesday, October 21, on Apple TV with Episode 6, “Judgment Day,” bringing another round of deadly espionage, questionable government decisions, and Jackson Lamb doing what Jackson Lamb does best: keeping his people alive while making everybody around him absolutely miserable. Unfortunately, surviving this particular mission isn't quite as straightforward as it should be.
River Cartwright's Fate Is the Finale's Biggest Question
River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) has spent much of Slow Horses proving that he belongs somewhere better than Slough House. Unfortunately, every time he tries to be the hero, the universe seems determined to remind him that working for British intelligence comes with a spectacularly terrible benefits package.
The finale brings River dangerously close to death after he is exposed to what appears to be the nerve agent Novichok. He collapses at his grandfather David Cartwright's home, leaving fans without a definitive answer about whether he survives. After six seasons of watching River get himself into one dangerous situation after another, this might be one of the most unsettling cliffhangers yet.
The return of Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) adds another emotional complication to River's story. Their shared history has always carried its own tension, and seeing River's life hanging in the balance after their paths cross again makes the ending particularly frustrating. After everything this man has survived, we're really going to leave him on the floor and expect fans to calmly wait for another season?
Jackson Lamb and Diana Taverner Face the Fallout
While River's fate supplies the emotional cliffhanger, the finale also forces Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) to work together as the situation surrounding their compromised safe house turns deadly. Considering these two can barely stand each other on a good day, their uneasy alliance was never going to be a pleasant experience.
But desperate circumstances have a way of forcing even the most stubborn enemies into cooperation. The season's bloody confrontation with Russian operatives leaves more devastation behind, including the deaths of Flyte and assassin Jane, while Louisa survives after being wounded.
For a series that has never been particularly sentimental about keeping its characters alive, the finale offers another reminder that nobody should feel completely safe. Slough House might be where MI5 sends its professional disappointments, but these agents regularly face situations that would send considerably more respectable operatives running for cover.
Will River Return for Season 7?
Apple TV has already renewed Slow Horses for Seasons 7 and 8, so the series isn't disappearing anytime soon. However, River's specific fate remains unresolved in the television adaptation, and the finale certainly doesn't go out of its way to provide reassurance.
Readers of Mick Herron's novels have reason for optimism because River survives his poisoning in the source material. That doesn't guarantee the television series will follow precisely the same path, but it gives fans something to hold on to while waiting for answers.
Season 7 is expected to adapt Bad Actors, bringing another conspiracy and plenty of trouble for the agents of Slough House. For now, the Season 6 finale leaves us with one major demand: somebody needs to check on River Cartwright before we spend the next year worrying about him.
