We finally made it to the Ghosts Season 5 finale and what a two-part event it was. CBS delivered a double-stuffed hour that managed to threaten the very existence of Woodstone Mansion while sending our favorite spectral freeloaders into an absolute panic. For a show built on the afterlife, the stakes have rarely felt this alive.
Part One: Data Centers and a Secret Princess
The first half of the finale immediately establishes our central dilemma. It turns out our quirky Mayor has sold his majority ownership in the property to an evil water company. Their grand vision for Woodstone? Knocking it down to build a data center. Because nothing says charming boutique bed-and-breakfast quite like rows of humming computer servers.
The only loophole capable of saving the mansion is getting the estate declared an official historical landmark. Naturally, that is easier said than done. Enter Nancy, the basement cholera ghost who usually lives in the literal shadows. The finale treats us to a much-anticipated backstory for Nancy, revealing how she died and dropping a massive bombshell: she is actually a princess.
Nancy is the definitive key to saving Woodstone. If Sam and Jay can prove she died on the property, the historical status is locked. The catch? They need a specific historical portrait of her wearing a signature necklace to prove her identity and that painting is currently sitting across the Atlantic in England.
Meanwhile, the bunker ghosts see the impending demolition as the perfect leverage. They begin haggling Hetty and the upstairs crew for more television time. In a hilariously petty negotiation, the bunker ghosts agree to grant the upstairs ghosts asylum in their underground dwelling if the mansion gets bulldozed but only if they get a larger share of the screen time right now.

Part Two: International Heists and a Heartbreaking Goodbye
The momentum shifts into overdrive for the second half of the hour. With time running out, Jay, Kyle and Pete head to England to track down the elusive portrait. Sam is forced to stay behind because her movie is finally being sold. In a massive win for our favorite mortal writer, the show gets picked up with Sam attached as the head writer for the subsequent sequels. We love a successful career milestone, even if the timing is terrible.
Over in England, the boys run into Imhotep, the ancient Egyptian ghost who previously hitched a ride with Pete. Imhotep uses his spectral knowledge to help Pete locate the portrait tucked away in a museum storage facility. Unfortunately, extracting information requires drastic measures. Imhotep unleashes his unique ghost power, a literal plague of locusts, to distract a museum employee.
While the bug trick works, it triggers a security lockdown that delays Jay and Kyle's flight back to America. This travel delay spells disaster for Pete. Because he has been away from the Woodstone property line for too long, his spirit begins to fade, and he completely disappears before the guys can get him home.
On the bright side, the portrait evidence makes it back in the nick of time. Woodstone Mansion is officially declared a historical landmark, forcing the evil water company to sell their majority ownership back to Sam. The home is saved, but the victory feels incredibly hollow.

The Verdict: A Bitter Sweet Ending
The Ghosts Season 5 finale proves that the show still knows how to pull the rug out from under its audience. Resolving the data center plot line ensures the central premise of the show remains intact, but sacrificing Pete to get there is a bold, devastating creative choice.
What about Pete? Is he permanently gone, or is he trapped somewhere in transit between the UK and New York? The writers have left us with a painful void to ponder until the show returns. It is a brilliant, frustrating conclusion that guarantees fans will be counting down the days until the Season 6 premiere.
