Season 3, Episode 1: “Feminine Wiles and Some Tire Thing in Lubbock”

Spoiler Warning: This recap contains spoilers for the Season 3 premiere of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.

Georgie Cooper has officially learned that being the man of the family doesn't necessarily mean anyone is going to listen to him. Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage returned for Season 3 on October 8, and apparently the entire family has decided that Georgie's opinions are optional. His mother is dating his business rival, his wife is going behind his back, and even his in-laws are getting involved in the deception. At this point, the only person who might be on Georgie's side is Georgie.

The premiere, titled "Feminine Wiles and Some Tire Thing in Lubbock," picks up with Georgie still furious that Mary has decided to pursue a relationship with Fred Fagenbacher. As if having a business rival wasn't annoying enough, now Georgie has to deal with the possibility of that man becoming part of the family. Unfortunately for him, Mary isn't interested in taking romantic advice from her son, and Georgie's attempt to control the situation only makes matters worse.

Georgie Cooper Has Met His Match, and It's His Own Mother

Georgie's problem isn't simply that Mary is dating again. It's that she's dating Fred Fagenbacher, a man Georgie considers an enemy because of their competing tire businesses. For Georgie, the relationship feels like a betrayal, and he's determined to make sure his mother understands exactly how he feels.

His solution is to keep CeeCee away from her grandmother until Mary agrees to stop seeing Fred. Now, Georgie, we understand that you don't like the man, but using your daughter as leverage in an argument with your mother is certainly a choice. Especially when that mother is Mary Cooper, a woman who has never been particularly interested in being told what to do.

Mandy isn't thrilled with Georgie's ultimatum either, and neither are Jim and Audrey. While they initially appear willing to support him, the family clearly understands that preventing a grandmother from seeing her granddaughter because of a disagreement between adults is taking things too far. The funniest part is that Georgie genuinely seems convinced everyone should understand his reasoning, but the more he insists that he's right, the more the people around him decide they're going to do whatever they want.

Everyone Has a Secret, and CeeCee Is the Worst Accomplice

While Georgie is busy standing his ground, Mandy decides that CeeCee shouldn't have to suffer because her father is having a tantrum. She secretly takes their daughter to visit Mary, figuring that what Georgie doesn't know won't hurt him.

There's just one small problem with expecting a child to keep a secret: children are notoriously terrible at it. CeeCee eventually lets it slip that she's seen her grandmother, leaving Mandy scrambling to keep Georgie from discovering what happened. And honestly, expecting a toddler to maintain family confidentiality might be the most unrealistic part of the entire plan.

Mandy isn't the only one sneaking around, either. Jim eventually takes CeeCee to see Mary after his granddaughter makes it clear that she misses her grandmother. Even Audrey, who isn't exactly Mary's biggest fan, finds herself getting involved. Yes, Audrey McAllister is siding with Mary Cooper, and if that doesn't tell Georgie he's losing this argument, nothing will.

What makes Audrey's involvement especially interesting is that she understands how painful it would be to have someone prevent her from seeing CeeCee. Whatever disagreements the two grandmothers have had, they can agree that their granddaughter shouldn't become collateral damage in a family dispute. It's a surprisingly sweet moment in an episode otherwise filled with people lying through their teeth.

Meanwhile, Connor Has Found Another Way to Make Things Worse

While Georgie's family is secretly undermining his parenting decisions, Connor is having problems of his own. He's managed to get himself arrested in Lubbock after being caught smoking marijuana with his bandmates, and naturally, he decides Georgie is the person who should come to his rescue.

Not his parents or someone from the band, but Georgie, who already has enough family drama to deal with. Connor calls asking for help, and Georgie reluctantly agrees to travel to Lubbock to bail him out. The problem is that Georgie doesn't want Mandy or her parents knowing what he's doing, which means he needs a believable excuse for suddenly disappearing.

His brilliant plan involves telling Mandy that he's dealing with a tire-related problem. Apparently, Georgie has figured out that mentioning tires is the quickest way to make his wife stop paying attention to the conversation. It's a ridiculous excuse, but it's also the kind of detail that makes this show work. Georgie may be growing into a responsible businessman and father, but he's still capable of coming up with some truly questionable ideas.

Unfortunately, bailing Connor out isn't nearly as simple as Georgie anticipated. Connor pleads guilty, and Georgie's attempt to intervene in court gets him held in contempt. He eventually manages to resolve the situation by offering free tires, because apparently that's his answer to just about every problem in life.

Afterward, Connor is terrified of returning home and facing Audrey's reaction. Georgie takes pity on him and arranges for him to stay with Ruben instead, agreeing to help maintain the illusion that Connor is continuing his band's tour. So while Georgie is furious that everyone is keeping secrets from him, he's busy helping his brother-in-law deceive the entire family. The irony is doing some serious heavy lifting here.

Georgie Can't Be the Only One Allowed to Break the Rules

Eventually, Georgie admits to Mandy that he bailed Connor out of jail and helped him hide what happened from his parents. Rather than explode, Mandy understands that Georgie was trying to protect someone he cares about, but she also recognizes the perfect opportunity to expose his double standard.

If Georgie can go behind the family's back because he believes he's doing the right thing for Connor, why is it unacceptable for Mandy to do the same thing when it comes to CeeCee and Mary? That's when Mandy confesses that she's been taking their daughter to visit her grandmother.

Of course, Georgie doesn't appreciate the comparison. In his mind, helping Connor and allowing Mary to see CeeCee are two entirely different situations, even though both involve keeping secrets to protect someone they love. And just when Georgie thinks he's figured out who's been sneaking around, Mary reveals that Jim and Audrey have also brought CeeCee over.

At this point, Georgie might as well call a family meeting and ask if there's anyone left who hasn't lied to him. Things get even messier when Georgie returns home ready to confront his in-laws, only to find Connor's ex-girlfriend Chloe there. She already knows about Connor's arrest, and when Connor calls pretending he's safely arrived in Austin, the family's latest deception begins falling apart. Apparently, nobody in this household can keep a secret for more than 20 minutes.

Mary Gets Her Granddaughter Back, but Georgie Isn't Ready to Forgive

By the end of the premiere, Georgie finally recognizes that keeping CeeCee away from Mary isn't fair. Whatever problems he has with his mother's romantic decisions, his daughter deserves to have a relationship with her grandmother. He brings CeeCee to Mary's house, putting an end to the restriction he imposed earlier in the episode. It's a step in the right direction, although anyone expecting a heartfelt mother-son reconciliation is about to be disappointed.

Georgie makes it clear that he still doesn't approve of Mary's relationship with Fred and has no intention of speaking to her while they're together. Mary's reaction is wonderfully dismissive. She's perfectly willing to accept those terms and promptly shuts the door in Georgie's face. And really, what did he expect? He spent the entire episode trying to dictate who his mother could date, and she spent the entire episode demonstrating that she doesn't need his permission. It's a fitting ending because neither Georgie nor Mary is particularly good at backing down. They've both inherited a stubborn streak that makes compromise nearly impossible, and now the family is stuck dealing with the consequences.

The Cooper Family Is Back, and the Drama Is Just Getting Started

What makes the Season 3 premiere entertaining is how effectively it uses the family's competing loyalties to create chaos. Everybody believes they're doing the right thing, but nobody is particularly interested in being honest with anyone else. Georgie wants to protect his business and his family, Mandy wants their daughter to have a relationship with her grandmother, and Mary simply wants to make her own decisions without having to answer to her grown son. None of those motivations are particularly unreasonable until everyone starts sneaking around and making the situation worse.

There's also something amusing about watching Georgie become increasingly frustrated with the exact behavior he's displaying himself. He expects honesty and loyalty from his family while secretly traveling to Lubbock, bailing Connor out of jail, and helping him avoid his parents. Sir, perhaps we should examine our own decisions before judging everyone else's.

The premiere also leaves Connor with some explaining to do. His parents are no longer completely in the dark about his arrest, and Georgie has managed to involve himself in yet another McAllister family problem.

Beyond the comedy, the episode raises an interesting question about Georgie's relationship with Mary. He stepped into a more responsible role following his father's death, but being responsible for his family doesn't mean he gets to control everyone's choices. Mary is still his mother, and she's entitled to a life of her own, even if her choice of boyfriend makes Thanksgiving dinner incredibly awkward.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is off to an entertaining start, with plenty of family tension, questionable decisions, and characters who desperately need to learn how to communicate. Then again, if everyone actually started telling the truth, we probably wouldn't have much of a sitcom.

New episodes of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage air Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
