The Crown, Who? FX Drops Explosive First Trailer for ‘Love Story: JFK Jr. & Carolyn Bessette’

A couple dances closely at night under warm string lights and lanterns, creating a romantic atmosphere at an elegant indoor event.

Move over, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, America’s original royals are back in the spotlight. FX just unleashed the first official trailer for American Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and if you thought the nineties were all about slap bracelets and flannel, Ryan Murphy is here to remind you they were also about the most beautiful people on earth being absolutely miserable.

A Match Made in Paparazzi Hell

The trailer wastes no time diving into the visual feast we’ve come to expect from the Murphy-verse. We see Paul Anthony Kelly sporting that specific brand of "Kennedy Hair" and Sarah Pidgeon stepping into the impossibly chic, minimalist shoes of Carolyn Bessette. For those who weren't scouring the tabloids in 1996, Bessette was the ultimate "It Girl" a Calvin Klein publicist who captured the heart of the world’s most eligible bachelor, only to realize that "Happily Ever After" is a lot harder when a dozen photographers are trying to climb into your window.

The footage leans heavily into the claustrophobia of fame. We get a haunting cover of Japanese Breakfast’s "Head Over Heels" playing over shots of the couple’s secret Georgia wedding and that infamous, agonizing public spat in Washington Square Park. If you were looking for a cozy rom-com, you’ve come to the wrong cave. This is a Greek tragedy dressed in a Narciso Rodriguez slip dress.

Naomi Watts Steals the Show (Obviously)

While the titular couple looks the part, the real scene-stealer in this trailer is Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Watching Watts deliver a chillingly polite warning to Carolyn about the "Kennedy Curse" is the kind of high-camp, high-stakes drama that keeps us glued to the screen. The trailer frames the series not just as a romance, but as a survival horror story where the monster is the public’s obsession.

Why This Is Your Next Obsession

Set to premiere February 12, on FX and Hulu, the nine-episode limited series looks to be more than just a costume parade. It tackles the crushing weight of legacy, with Carolyn’s heartbreaking final line in the trailer"It’s a question of if I’m cut out to be Mrs. JFK Jr." setting the tone for the tragedy we all know is coming.

Whether you’re here for the 90s fashion inspo or the delicious, high-end angst, this is shaping up to be the TV event of the winter. Grab your popcorn and your vintage Ray-Bans; it’s going to be a bumpy flight.
