Fire Country Season 5 Premiere Opens With a Catastrophic Edgewater Sinkhole

Fire Country has burned plenty of Edgewater over the years, so apparently Season 5 decided to try swallowing part of the town instead.

CBS has revealed details for the Season 5 premiere, “Founders’ Day,” and the new season will begin with a catastrophic sinkhole opening beneath Main Street while residents are celebrating Edgewater’s annual Founders’ Day festival. Because of course it happens during a festival. Nobody on television is ever allowed to enjoy a community event in peace.

The disaster traps residents underground and forces Station 42 into a major rescue operation as firefighters race to reach the people below. A massive sinkhole also creates a very different kind of emergency for the crew, with victims trapped beneath the town and an unstable scene making an already dangerous rescue even more complicated. It certainly sounds like Fire Country is going big for its return.

The series has never been shy about putting Edgewater and its residents directly in the path of disaster, but having Main Street collapse during one of the town’s biggest celebrations gives the Season 5 premiere an immediate sense of urgency. With residents gathered for Founders’ Day when the ground opens beneath them, Station 42 won't have much time to figure out its next move.

But the sinkhole isn't the only development CBS is teasing. While everyone is dealing with the fact that Edgewater’s Main Street has quite literally opened beneath their feet, a mysterious former firefighter arrives in town. And that's all CBS is telling us.

The network isn't revealing the character's identity, why they have come to Edgewater or whether they have a history with anyone at Station 42. Still, dropping a “mysterious former firefighter” into the premiere certainly makes it sound like this person could have a bigger role to play as the season unfolds.

Come on. Nobody mysteriously arrives in Edgewater without bringing some baggage with them. The combination gives Fire Country two intriguing ways to kick off Season 5. There is the immediate spectacle of a massive rescue operation, while the arrival of the unidentified firefighter gives viewers a mystery that could extend beyond the premiere.

First, though, Station 42 has to deal with an enormous hole in the middle of town and get the people trapped underground back to safety. Apparently fires weren't keeping these people busy enough.
