Grab your hard hats and check your scream canisters because Pixar is finally heading back to the factory floor. After years of fans screaming into the void and not for power generation purposes, the industry is buzzing with the news that Monsters, Inc. 3 is officially in development. While the 2013 prequel, Monsters University, gave us a decent look at Mike and Sulley’s frat-boy phase, the world has been waiting over two decades for a proper follow-up to the 2001 original.
The Release Window: Don't Hold Your Breath Just Yet
According to recent industry reports, Pixar is currently eyeing a release window around 2029 or 2030. Yes, you read that correctly. We have a few more years of "23-19" drills before this actually hits theaters. This long lead time is classic Pixar spending half a decade ensuring the fur rendering is perfect while the rest of us age into senior citizenship.
Plot Rumors: Is Boo Finally Back?
The biggest question on everyone’s mind is the fate of Mary Gibbs’ iconic character, Boo. While the studio is keeping the script under tighter lock and key than Randall’s camouflage secrets, the rumor mill suggests the story will finally jump to the "present day." This likely means we will meet an adult Boo, raising the existential question of whether she remembers her "Kitty" or if she just thinks the whole thing was a very vivid fever dream.
Pete Docter, the mastermind behind the original, has previously hinted at an interest in exploring where the characters go after they transitioned from scream power to laugh power. It’s a transition ripe for the kind of corporate satire and emotional gut-punches Pixar excels at.
The Returning Cast
It wouldn’t be a Monsters flick without the bickering chemistry of Billy Crystal (Mike Wazowski) and John Goodman (Sulley). Both legends are expected to return, hopefully with their vocal cords intact after nearly thirty years of playing these roles. Whether or not we get a return from the delightfully bureaucratic Roz or the slippery Randall remains to be seen, but the core duo is the heartbeat of this franchise.
Why Now? The Sequel Surge
Hollywood loves a safe bet. Following the earth-shattering success of recent sequels like Inside Out 2, Disney and Pixar are leaning heavily into established brands. This is a strategy that prioritizes nostalgia over new risks, but when the nostalgia is this high-quality, it’s hard to complain too loudly about a return to Monstropolis.
The Park Expansion
If you can’t wait until 2029, Disney is also building a dedicated Monsters, Inc. land at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando. Set to open ahead of the film, it will feature the first-ever suspended door coaster, finally allowing fans to live out their dream of being an OSHA nightmare.
The wait for more Monstropolis content has been long, but with a third film finally on the horizon, the future looks bright and hopefully hilarious.
Are you excited to see a grown-up Boo, or should Pixar have left the door closed? Stay tuned to The TV Cave for every update as it breaks.
