Elsbeth Season 4 Premiere Recap: “Crazy in Love” Proves Love Can Be Murder

Elsbeth is back for Season 4, and apparently, marriage counseling is getting a little more dangerous. The premiere, “Crazy in Love,” introduces a relationship expert who knows exactly what to tell struggling couples, even if she's not particularly good at following her own advice. Between a murderous love triangle, some unexpected personal revelations, and Elsbeth doing what she does best, this season is already off to an entertaining start.
Nicole Scherzinger guest stars as Serena Collyer, a successful couples therapist whose picture-perfect marriage is anything but perfect. Meanwhile, Detective Bobby Smullen has some relationship troubles of his own, and Elsbeth finds herself caught between solving a murder and figuring out what's going on with her colleague.
A Marriage Expert With a Deadly Secret
Serena Collyer has built a successful career teaching couples how to maintain healthy marriages. During a seminar, she enthusiastically discusses communication, commitment, and trust while using her own 11-year marriage to Graham as an example. She even promotes her book, because what good is a supposedly successful marriage if you can't make a little money talking about it?
Unfortunately, Serena's personal life tells a different story. She's carrying on a passionate affair with Casey Arthurs, a man from her past who seems to have a hold on her that she can't shake. Their relationship is intense, dysfunctional, and apparently impossible to end. Casey knows Serena will always come back, and that confidence isn't sitting well with her.
When Casey announces that he's staying in New York longer than expected, Serena realizes her carefully maintained double life could fall apart. Rather than simply ending the affair, she comes up with a much more permanent solution.
Serena cleans their secret meeting place, removes evidence of their relationship, and uses Casey's phone to send a message to Luke Prescott, one of her therapy clients. The message claims Casey is sleeping with Luke's wife, Lauren, and provides the address where Luke can find him.
Luke takes the bait and confronts Casey, beating him badly before leaving. Serena later returns to the apartment, where Casey asks why she can't leave him alone. This time, she takes him literally and shoots him. So much for healthy communication.
Elsbeth Finds the Clues That Don't Add Up
Elsbeth arrives at the crime scene alongside Detective Bobby Smullen and Officer Grace Hackett. Naturally, she immediately starts noticing things that everyone else might overlook, including Casey's hacky sack, expensive wine, and the unusually clean surfaces in an otherwise messy apartment.
The murder weapon is registered to Casey, but the physical evidence raises questions. Why are there bloody fingerprints on the doorknob but none on the gun? Why would someone carefully clean parts of the apartment while leaving other evidence behind?
Smullen believes Luke is their killer, especially after discovering his violent confrontation with Casey. Elsbeth isn't convinced, and her instincts tell her there's more to this particular love triangle.
Their investigation takes an unexpected turn when Lauren admits she's having an affair, just not with Casey. Her boyfriend is someone named Steve, which leaves the detectives wondering why Luke received a message identifying Casey as his wife's lover.
The connection between the couple and Serena Collyer soon becomes clear. Serena is their marriage counselor, and both Luke and Lauren appear in her book under different names.
Elsbeth, who happens to be a fan of Serena's work, is thrilled to meet the famous therapist. Unfortunately for Serena, having Elsbeth as an admirer doesn't mean she's going to overlook suspicious behavior.
Marriage Counseling Gets Complicated
When Elsbeth and Smullen interview Serena, the therapist describes Luke and Lauren's marriage as toxic. She doesn't provide Luke with an alibi, and her responses only raise additional questions.
Serena becomes defensive when the detectives make dismissive comments about Casey. Elsbeth notices the reaction, and it's another small piece of the puzzle that makes Serena increasingly suspicious. Meanwhile, the investigation reveals a few surprises about Smullen. His unusually sharp remarks about infidelity and struggling marriages aren't simply professional opinions. Something personal is clearly bothering him, and Elsbeth wants to know what it is.
Watching Elsbeth and Smullen accidentally attend a couples group together is particularly funny. They argue and interact so much like a married couple that the situation practically writes its own jokes. Officer Hackett even compares their attempts to be polite to a hostage negotiation. These two have an entertaining dynamic, and their disagreements make the investigation more enjoyable.
Serena's Past Comes Back to Haunt Her
The investigation eventually leads to Viper, one of Casey's musician friends, who reveals that Serena and Casey have a long and complicated history. Their relationship was addictive and unhealthy, and Viper is particularly surprised to learn that Serena has become a professional relationship counselor.
Serena finally admits she knew Casey in graduate school but downplays how close they were. She attempts to distract Elsbeth and Smullen with her therapeutic techniques, encouraging them to connect with their feelings instead of focusing on the questions she's avoiding.
For a moment, it almost works. Elsbeth even gets a compliment on her bags, which certainly doesn't hurt. However, Serena's manipulation becomes increasingly obvious. She continues pushing the detectives toward Luke, eventually claiming he contacted her in a rage. Her statements help land him behind bars, but Elsbeth still isn't buying the story.
The breakthrough comes when Hackett follows up on Elsbeth's interest in the expensive wine discovered at Casey's apartment. Surveillance footage shows Serena purchasing the bottle roughly an hour before the murder, providing the investigators with the evidence they need to connect her to the crime.
The Truth About Serena's Perfect Marriage
Smullen interrupts Serena's Looking Inward seminar, clearing the room so Elsbeth and Hackett can confront her. They explain how Serena manipulated Luke into attacking Casey before returning to finish the job herself.
Faced with the evidence, Serena's carefully constructed image finally collapses. She blames Casey for ruining her life and admits that despite having a devoted husband, she found Graham boring. Apparently, love, loyalty, and stability weren't enough for someone who made a living telling other people how to appreciate those very things.
Watching Serena unravel is satisfying, especially after seeing how easily she manipulated the people who trusted her. Nicole Scherzinger makes Serena an entertaining villain, balancing the polished public persona with the deeply troubled woman underneath.
Smullen's Marriage Is Falling Apart
While Elsbeth works to solve Casey's murder, she also becomes concerned about Smullen's increasingly personal reactions to the case. She discovers he has an online dating profile despite being married and brings her concerns to Captain Wagner.
Wagner initially insists that Smullen's personal life isn't Elsbeth's business. Of course, that doesn't stop him from discussing the situation with his wife, Claudia, almost immediately. Eventually, Claudia learns from Sally Smullen that she and Bobby have separated. The news explains why Smullen has been so irritable throughout the investigation, and it's clear he's struggling with the breakup.
One particularly amusing moment finds Smullen looking up instructions for doing laundry. Apparently, being a detective doesn't necessarily prepare someone for the responsibilities of living alone. By the end of the episode, Elsbeth offers Smullen a sympathetic ear. He seems genuinely appreciative and even suggests he might take her up on it.
Could these two eventually become something more than colleagues? Their chemistry certainly raises the question, although their friendship is already one of the show's more entertaining relationships.
Teddy Has Wedding News, but Elsbeth Has Questions to Answer
The premiere also brings back Teddy, who visits his mother with some exciting news. He and Roy have finally chosen a wedding date: May 1. Naturally, Elsbeth is thrilled. She already has a mood board prepared, because nobody should expect this woman to approach wedding planning with anything resembling restraint.
However, Teddy also brings up something more serious. Elsbeth's mother apparently hasn't been able to reach her, and Elsbeth quickly avoids the subject. Her reaction is unusual enough to suggest there's more going on than she's willing to admit. It's a small development in an otherwise busy premiere, but it could become an interesting storyline as the season continues.
Final Thoughts: A Delightfully Twisted Season Premiere
“Crazy in Love” delivers the quirky murder mystery, clever observations, and unexpected humor that make Elsbeth such an enjoyable series. Serena's hypocrisy provides plenty of entertainment, while her elaborate attempt to frame an innocent man gives Elsbeth another opportunity to prove that the smallest details can expose the biggest lies.
It's also wonderful to have Officer Hackett, Captain Wagner, and Claudia back. Smullen's personal troubles add another layer to his character, and his interactions with Elsbeth are especially entertaining. I'm curious to see whether their relationship develops into something more, particularly now that he's separated.
Teddy's return is another welcome addition, and his upcoming wedding gives Elsbeth something exciting to obsess over. But the mystery surrounding her own mother is worth keeping an eye on. Overall, this was a terrific way to begin Season 4, with an entertaining guest villain, a clever investigation, and enough personal drama to keep things interesting beyond the weekly murder.
