This week, Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton pivot toward a massive corporate survival strategy, striking a deeply uncomfortable deal with their ultimate rival, Beulah Jackson, over at the 10-Petal Ranch. Meanwhile, young Carter finds himself witnessing an absolute nightmare that entirely shatters his innocent world. Whew. Grab a strong drink, because this hour does not slow down for anyone.
Watching Rip work for anyone else feels deeply wrong. Not us feeling a certain way about him putting on a foreman badge for the 10-Petal Ranch, but desperate times call for an $11,000-a-month salary. Introduced to the formidable Beulah Jackson by Everett, Rip wastes zero time establishing his dominance. On day one, he fires Chet, a toxic hand who is practically begging for a trip to the train station. The problem? Chet is packing major leverage, specifically the gun used to kill Wes, the missing ranch hand whose corpse Rip previously discovered rotting on Dutton soil.
While Rip is playing muscle, Beth is doing what she does best: drinking Scotch and dismantling bank accounts. Yes, girl, walk into the lion's den with a business pitch. After a quick deep-dive into the 10-Petal’s crumbling 190-year history, Beth structures a brilliant deal to launch a bespoke meat line. She demands a 5-year contract and 20% of the profits while scrub-brushing the Dutton name entirely off the label to keep their reputation safe. Beulah accepts, but make no mistake, both of these women are holding knives behind their backs. Beulah openly admits she loves hiring desperate people with dark secrets because they are easily corrupted, while Beth informs Rip she only needs seven days to figure out where Beulah buries her metaphorical bodies.
Meanwhile Carter is busy having the absolute worst day ever. Still skipping school and deeply resentful of Beth's parenting, he spends his day hanging out with the local eccentric, Dwight White. Things start out fun enough, Carter brings his crush, Oreana, over to drink stolen beers and feed Dwight's highly illegal pet leopard, Xena. It is peak teenage rebellion until the local authorities completely ruin the vibe.
Later that night, the deeply corrupt Sheriff Wade storms the property. Dwight runs, and Wade puts a bullet right through his back. It is a cold-blooded execution disguised as self-defense. The issue is that Carter is hiding in the shadows and notices Dwight's knife is still completely buttoned into its holster. At the station, Wade lays down a heavy, terrifying ultimatum to the kid: shut your mouth or bad things happen. To protect Rip and Beth from discovering his illegal truant adventures, Carter signs a dirty pact with the devil, promising to pretend he never saw the murder. Watching him break down sobbing in Oreana’s arms later was a massive reality check. The kid is officially initiated into the dark reality of this valley.
The final moments deliver the exact kind of tension that keeps us glued to the screen. Beth returns home triumphant, boasting that she will completely break Beulah within a week. That is when Rip drops the ultimate reality check: he admits that Wes's dead body was found on their land, meaning they just walked directly into a trap set by the very people cutting their paychecks. Beth’s final words, "Peace will have to wait," set up a brutal path forward. With Beulah's unhinged son, Rob-Will, freshly out of rehab and hunting down the disgruntled Chet, the board is set for a massive collision.
