Disney+ Orders Afterlife with Archie Series: Riverdale Is About to Get a Whole Lot Deadlier

The House of Mouse decided to drag us right back into the suburban trenches. Disney+ has officially handed a full series order to Afterlife with Archie, upgrading the long-gestating live-action project into a locked-in, hour-long supernatural horror drama. Slated for a spooky Halloween 2027 premiere, the adaptation aims to turn Riverdale into a literal graveyard, proving that the corporate hunger for nostalgic teen drama simply refuses to stay dead. Whew.

For the uninitiated, this new venture directly targets the celebrated 2013 Archie Horror comic line written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla. The premise kicks off when Sabrina Spellman flubs a necromancy spell, inadvertently unleashing a flesh-eating plague of the possessed dead upon her unsuspecting neighbors. Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead are forced to trade their milkshake-sipping high school anxieties for a brutal fight to survive.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is back steering the ship as creator and executive producer. After delivering seven seasons of pure, unadulterated camp on The CW's Riverdale and diving deep into the occult on Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, he is now bringing his signature dramatic sensibilities to Disney+. Teaming up with him are executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions, alongside Warner Bros. Television and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Jon Goldwater. It is a massive, cross-studio collaboration that positions the series as a premier flagship horror title for the streaming platform.

Naturally, the internet is already buzzing about the casting, or lack thereof.
