Chicago P.D. Season 14 Episode 5 Recap: Kim's Undercover Mission Hits Too Close to Home

Moving into a new house is supposed to be exciting, but for Kim and Adam, settling in isn't happening quite as easily as they hoped. Kim isn't sleeping well, strange noises in the house aren't helping, and even though Mac seems to be loving her new school, there's still that feeling that everything is a little unfamiliar. Adam tries to keep things positive, reminding Kim that it'll start feeling like home soon enough. They've got a neighborhood block party coming up, and maybe that's exactly what they need to start feeling like they belong.
But as we know, there's never much time to enjoy the quiet in Chicago. It starts with Kim taking a call on the way into the district that leads her to a vehicle connected to Jared Munson, a dangerous drug dealer whose crew is pushing high grade fentanyl. They find drug packaging and a lot of cash, along with a connection to Jennifer Weaver, one of Munson's known couriers. Instead of simply taking the money, the team comes up with a plan. They're going to let it get back to Munson and use the opportunity to get someone inside his operation. That someone is Kim, she volunteers herself to go undercover.
Kim approaches Munson with a story about finding his missing money and wanting to return it. She even brings up knowing his sister, hoping to make the connection feel more personal. Munson’s girlfriend Deedee is a ball of energy and makes the actual introduction. Kim does a good job playing her part, sharing just enough about her past to make her story believable. Munson isn't exactly welcoming, but he sees something in Kim and offers her a job as a driver. It's an opportunity the team needs, but getting closer to a man like Munson comes with plenty of risks.
Deedee takes Kim on her first run, she talks about getting clean, her plans for beauty school, and the life she's trying to build for herself. Once at the spot they are attacked, but Kim handles it. Deedee is impressed and tells Munson. But Munson isn't someone who takes people at face value. After hearing how Kim handles herself, he starts asking questions about her background and whether she has military experience. That's when things get uncomfortable. He's looking for answers, and Kim knows she can't afford to give him a reason to become suspicious.
The team needs more than just Deedee’s access. They need something that connects Munson directly to his drug supply. The plan is to get a listening device into his office, which means Kim has to take another big risk in getting the key from Deedee.
And just when it seems like things might be coming together, the warning signs start appearing. Kim tells Ruzek she got the key only for him to call back and said that she had been made. Munson has been watching. After reviewing security footage, Ruzek realizes Munson’s vehicle had been spotted outside of their new home and he saw Mac. He tells her to get out of there and he and Mack will go to the safe house.
Unfortunately, Munson gets to her before she can safely walk away. He confronts Kim, realizes she's been lying, and becomes furious when he doesn’t tell him where Deedee is because she's stolen his money. The situation turns ugly fast. Munson threatens her, and makes it clear he's willing to kill her. Kim fights back, but now Munson is on the run, armed and dangerous.
The team immediately starts searching for him, knowing Deedee could be in serious danger. They locate a friend of Deedee’s and go over to see if they can find Deedee. Unfortunately Deedee and her friend are found. It’s clear Munson found them first and no one is alive. In leaving they see blood not belonging to the two victims. They follow the trail to the alley trying to see where Munson could have gone because clearly he is hurt.
Back at the district they follow the clues, track down possible associates, and eventually discover that Munson has a background in boxing. That leads them to 12 Round, one of the gyms he's known to frequent. The team moves in, and the confrontation ends with shots fired and Munson finally stopped.
Even with the operation over, there's still something unsettling about the whole situation. Voight says Munson may have figured out the undercover operation much earlier than anyone realized. Voight says he tracked the car, asked questions. He reassured Kim it wasn’t her fault he was just smart.
With the case being over, Kim is back home and at the block party. Ruzek and Kim finally get a chance to meet their neighbor, Wayne. There's some friendly conversation, a little encouragement about Mac's future, and a sense that maybe the new neighborhood is starting to feel a little less strange. Kim admits she's still on edge, and after everything she's just been through, who could blame her? But Ruzek reminds her that things are going to be okay.
After all the danger and uncertainty, it's nice to see them get a moment like this. They're still finding their way in a new house, a new neighborhood, and a new routine. And maybe, just maybe, it really will start feeling like home.
